Updated November 9, 2000

About Our Family Research

Generation No. 1
Augustin York was born in 1835. He married Susan York, born in Virginia, 1848. His name has been spelled many different ways; Gisten, Gisten, Gustin, AND Guster. He was often called "Papa Gister. Those who carried his name were often called the same names. This union produced the following children;
Augustin York Jr.(Oct. 1877-Dec. 16, 1956) in Louisiana
Emily York (Oct. 1865-?)
Betsy York (1867-?)
Louisa York (Sept. 1876-?)
Charles York (April-1880-?)
Albert York (Jan. 1892-?)

Generation 2
This research started in 1992, prior to my father, Cleveland York Sr.'s death. He wanted to know who his ancestors were. I used the notes from the Family Bible and interview information
that I gathered from hiim and his siblings. His parents were Augustin York (Oct.1877-Dec.1956)&Amelia Craig York. From this union of Augustin and Amelia Clara, came as follow:
Curtis Barber ((1900-Dec.1965) Gisten's stepson
Augustin York III, known as Gisten York (1903-1969)
Gertrude York (1905-Feb.1959)
Clara York (1909-Feb. 1974
Ida York (1914-July, 1931)
Thelma York (1912-1995)
Sylvester York Sr. (Nov.12,1916-Oct.13,1992)
Cleveland York Sr. (June 17, 1919-April 1, 1992)
Detroit York (May 1,1921-Nov.9,1973)

My father, Cleveland and his father, Augustin Jr., died without knowing who their ancesters were. But my father remembers that when he was a toddler, he would call his grandmother Mommie Susan; He didn't remember seeing her but a few times. My father didn't know any uncles, aunts, or cousins in Louisiana. My grandfather never knew much about them either; Not even their names or where they went. But the 1870 census shows that they were in Louisiana also.
Generation 2 list is incomplete. It does not include the children of my grandfather, Augustin Jr. siblings; Emily, Betsy, Louisa, Charles, and Albert. I do not have any information about them at this time.

Generation 3
Cleveland York married Ceola Davis - July 5, 1941. From this union came:
Clara York (April 2, 1942- )
Cleveland York Jr. (Jan. 3, 1948 - )
Sterling York (Feb. 8, 1949 - )
Rudy York (March 23, 1950 - )
Lillie Mae York (Sept. 26, 1952 - )
Amelia York (Dec. 7, 1954 - )
Sheila Ann York (Sept. 11, 1956 - )
Deborah York (July 9, 1958 - )
Eric James York (June 28, 1964 - )

This list is incomplete. It only list the children of Cleveland York Sr.
The rest of this generation includes the children of my
father's brothers and sisters.

Generation 4
This generation consist of all of the children from the 3rd generation.

Generation 5
This generation consist of all of the children from the 4th generation.

Our first reunion was held in Gonzales, Louisiana in 1998.
We are planning another for 2000!

When completed, I will submit the "York Family" information in book form to the Library of Congress, so that it can be housed in public libraries.

Please contact me if you think that you or someone you know could be a link to this family.
