The Zabel, Gilbert, Williams, Lyles, Kelly Family

About Our Family Research

The research for answers concerning the main family lines of this family tree has been interesting if somewhat frustrating. The main branches seem to end, while lines that married into the main group result in many unexpected surprises. If anyone can shed light on any of these mysteries, please do so.

The Zabel line goes back only to August or Gust Zabel, born June 24, 1862 in Wolenski, Russia. His wife, Wilhemina or Minnie Robert, was also born in Wolenski, Russia. Her parents were Gottleib Robert, born Jan. 18, 1833 in Girsh, Poland, and Caroline Jobs, born Sept. 18, 1843 in Germany. Caroline's parents were Peter Jobs and Louise Zielken. We know Gust and his brother Jonathan (nicknamed Mike), Minnie, and her parents and other brothers/sisters came to the Oklahoma Panhandle in the late 1890s. They homesteaded land south of Hooker, Oklahoma.

The research on the Gilbert branch ends with John Gilbert, who died before 1830, probably in Sumner County, Tennessee. John was married to Elizabeth, who was apparently from Virginia.

The Williams line deadends in Nebraska with an ancestor without even a first name, born about 1812. He married a Native American woman, possibly a Pawnee (family rumor has that she was the daughter of a chief), named Zo-Da-Be-Ca which Americanized is Zoda Beca. Their son's name was Marriage Place Williams, and he married Mary Keane of Lincoln, Nebraska.

The Lyles stop with Henry Liles, born in North Carolina about 1759.

The Kelly/Kelleys go back to William Kelley, born before 1670 in Ireland. Some interesting lines branch off both the Lyles and the Kellys.

  • The Zabel / Gilbert family (2163 KB)
The Zabel and Gilbert families joined, creating a new and spreading tree. Surnames from Zabel, Gilbert, Williams, Nickens, Lyles, Kelly, Hazelwood to Conn, Isaacs, Matthews, Patterson, Troutman and many others branch off the main line, many times larger and longer than the Zabel or Gilbert branches. This has been a hobby which became a passion, but hopefully, the errors are few and minor.
