Nick Zarpas was born on the Greek island of Chios on January 10th, 1882. He was one of six children: Maria (b.1878), Nick (b.1882), Giassemi (b.1887), Anastasia (b.1891), Polixeni (b.1898), and Matheo (birth date unknown). Nick, Anastasia, Yiassemi and Polixeni Zarpas all later immigrated to the United States. Matheo Zarpas went to Buenos Aires (Argentina) to open a shoe factory. Maria Zarpas remained on Chios and married Aristidis Zombakis. George Zombakis , the son of Aristidis and Maria settled in Monessen, PA.
Nick Zarpas came to Monessen in 1907 and established a successful business on Fifth & Donner as a street vendor selling popcorn and peanuts. Nick returned to Chios circa August 15th, 1912 to claim his new bride, Florence (Anthitsa Michalos) and came back to Monessen after a short honeymoon. Nick and Florence had five sons:
Stephen Zarpas (b. October 29, 1915, d. June 11, 2003) Constantine/Gus Zarpas (b. Feb. 23, 1918), d. July 30, 2011 Michael Zarpas (b. Sept 13, 1919, d. January 6, 2000) Samuel Zarpas (b.April 18, 1921, d. January 16, 2002) Ted Zarpas (b. January 9, 1927, d. Feb. 26, 1992).
Anthitsa Michalos-Zarpas suffered a fatal heart attack on December 19, 1932 and Nick Zarpas died in 1933 at the age of 51
