The Kolomea Zeichner Family

Updated November 9, 2000

About Our Family Research

The Zeichner Family originated in Kolomea, also spelled Kolomyja and Kolomyya. Located in Galicia, Kolomea was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire during the 19th and most of the 20th centuries and its capital was Vienna. Today, it is located in south eastern Ukraine. Thanks to the help of many family members, the family has been traced back to the early 1800's in Kolomea and later in Vienna as well as those descendants who settled predominantly in the United States as well as in other countries. Prior to World War I, many Jews from that area left and moved to their capital, Vienna. Many of the family chose to remain in Europe or were unable to leave and as a result perished either under Russian rule or during the Holocaust. While initially, the family was settled predominantly in New York and New Jersey, they have now spread out to at least a dozen different states. In addition to the Kolomea Zeichner Branch, there is also a branch with origins in Jablonow which is in the Kolomea District and but 4 or 5 miles from Kolomea. Also, there is a branch from Lukowicz and Jadova in Bukowina, about 20 miles away and today all part of the Ukraine. The first full reunion of the Zeichner Descendants is scheduled for Sunday, September 24, 2000 at the Jewish Community Center in Hopatcong, NJ and a large turnout is anticipated. For the first time, a family tree will be distributed.
