Born in the village of Witkowice, in Krakow, Poland under the given name of Michal Zima. Michal had 3 brothers and 1 sister and was the son of Josephiet Margarethe Liamske. His father died when Michal was around 8 or 9 years old.

Justyna Sokolowska was the daughter of George Sokolowski and Kalbethiet Reginae Lekanska. Justyna had 3 sisters and 1 brother the complete opposite of Michal in siblings.

Michal and Justyna were married on January 18, 1904 and had a total of 13 children although their first two sons only lived a few weeks after their birth. Beginning in 1908 Michal and Justyna family began with the birth of their first daughter, Josephine and ending 12 years later with the birth of Frances Ruth in 1930.
