Jose Antonio Robles from Guadalajara, b. 1776 arrives Monterey 1797 with wife Gertrudis Merlopes. Different source of information reports that Jose Antonio Robles married maria rosalia gertruis (chk spelling) merlopes in 1797 at San Lorenzo river. It is reported that he did marry Maria but when she died suddenly he then married Gertrudis. Viceroy Branciforte of Mexico offered Jose Antonio Robles a chance to go as a poblador (original settler) of a new city in Alta California. The offer was a hansome one, with traveling expenses, a five-year subsidy, land and a chance to buy tools and cattle on credit. The deal was too good to be true and when he got to Santa Cruz there was nothing but open fields and no money from Spain. He and his wife made an adobe home and lived in it with the children.
He had held his first public office in California when he was elected regidor in 1805 and by 1817 had been made comisionado. Twice, in 1827 and 1833 he had been picked by his fellow townsmen to be named jusz by the governor.
