Jelle Jurjens Zoethout (Nauta) was a sawmiller, mastmaker and merchant in Woudsend. In 1719 he and third wife built the sawmill "De Jager" in Woudsend. The windmill is still in use today. There is a plaque on his former home at 7 Bewaarschoolsteeg, Woudsend. He was one wealthiest persons living in Woudsend. Jelles original surname was Nauta. Because of the fine quality wood products he produced he got the nickname "Zoethout" (meaning Sweetwood). He liked the name well enough to change his surname to Zoethout.
