The Abraham Zuker's Of Ukraine, Russia

Updated February 16, 2005

About Our Family Research

I have been researching the Abraham Zuker Geneology since early 2001. He came from the Ukraine some where arround 1840-1846. I'm not sure, but it appears that his father could be Lieb Zuker and mother Jente. There is an entry in Family Search with World Record with this information, reflecting an Abraham Zuker born in 1816. Lieb and Jente Zuker were also reflected as the parents of a Moses Israel Zuker, born in 1824 in the city of Lemberg, Austria. The foke lore of the family reflects Abraham store away in a barrel of feathers and emigrated to America. However, I have been unable to find any record of his entry by boat to America.
Abraham supposedly married an Sarah Elizabeth from Tennessee somewhere arround 1846 or '47. He supposedly operated two dry goods stores in Rome, Ga. and Cave Springs, GA. He left his family in about 1856. The rumor was he went to New York City. His wife got a letter from his with $500. and that was the last she heard from him. They heard through a mutual Jewish friend in GA that he had gone to NY, NY.
In the US 1870 Census, I discovered the 1st record of his wife.
She was listed as 45 years old. The 1st child, William Wiley Zuker was 19 years old years old, 2nd child, Lewis Zuker was 17 years old, while the 3rd child LeJenie was 15 years old. They were living on a farm in Floyd County, GA.
I have pictures of Abraham's wife Sarah Elizabeth, William Wiley, and about 9 pictures of Wiliam wiley's 14 Children. I am a decendent of William Wiley, he is my Great Grandfather.
Sarah Elizabeth Zuker remarried in Dec. 1874 to a Mather M. Southerlan in Floyd County. I do find any other reference to Mather H. Southerlan or Sarah Elizabeth Zuker Southerlan until the US 1900 Census: She was listed as Elizabeth Southerlan born August 1828 in Tennessee.
I also found a record of Abraham's Daughter Lejene Zuker Hifil(married in 1880 to John Hifil). Lejene revealed that he father was born on a Russian Jew.
I have checked all Geneology sites on the internet for any information on
Abraham, and trying to verify anything from the Ukraine area.
Early references to the Jewish migration reveals that 90 percent of the Jews in Russia lived in the Pales in and arround L'vov, later unter control of Austria as Lemberg.
I have also contacted the Center for Jewish History in NY, NY for help in tracing Abraham Zuker(zucker) in the NY area.
We have contact with relatives in the Ga area in and arround the Floyd County, GA area. I have also contacted Distant cousins in Oklahoma.
Very hopeful to find traces of my Jewish Roots, and the location to which Abraham Zuker migrated.
