About the Data
This data set contains
images of the pages of thirty-five comprehensive books of Ohio county and family
histories. Many of these volumes were published in very small quantities and for
limited distribution. Because of this, they have previously been hard to find
and research. These detailed volumes contain information on approximately 700,000
Ohio residents and their families.
This data set is unique because it provides not only family histories but county
histories as well. These accounts cover a broad range of topics from geography
and agriculture to early settlers and the educational system. County histories
invariably include information on early residents and county pioneers. The volumes
were compiled from public record as well as private correspondence and provide
a detailed account of life in these counties.
What you can learn about each listed individual varies. For the most part, however,
you can learn an ancestor's birth date, marriage date, occupation, and death date.
Many volumes include more detailed information such as a description of property
owned, information about an individual's will, notable personal characteristics
and features, and photographs.
Researching with these volumes you can learn, for example, not only that your
ancestor was married in Fulton County in 1800 but what Fulton County was like
in 1800. With this information you are able to gain a more complete understanding
of your ancestors and the times and locations in which they lived.
