About the Data
This data set contains information on approximately 8,600 individuals who immigrated to the United States between 1820 and 1873. It is an index to Copies of Lists of Passengers Arriving at Miscellaneous Ports on the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts and at Ports on the Great Lakes, rolls 4 and 5 from the National Archives (full source citation is provided below). Information contained in this index includes the name of the immigrant, port of arrival, date of arrival, port of departure, and the page number on which the individual can be found on the microfilms. It is important to use the information found in this index to locate your ancestor in the original records as original records generally provide more information than do their indexes.

This data set contains information from the following ports and years:

Field Example

Names — The names of passengers.

In some records you will find question marks in the place of the given name or surname. This indicates that the name was not listed on the original record. You may also find question marks in place of missing letters.

A question mark after a name indicates that the name spelling was unclear. You may also occasionally find the same record listed in the index under two different name spellings. Please note that not all unusual and uncertain names were noted by question marks, so always be sure to check under various spellings if you are having trouble locating a name.

Port of Arrival — The port the individual arrived at.

Port of Departure — The port the individual departed from. Not all entries will list this information.

Date — The date of arrival.
