Pennsylvania - Naturalizations (1740-1773)
About the Data
Prior to the American Revolution, Philadelphia was the destination for thousands of immigrants seeking a new life in the colonies. This database is a listing of approximately 3700 individuals who naturalized in the Pennsylvania colony between 1740 and 1773. Each record contains the individual's name, location of naturalization, and date of naturalization. The book from which this database was compiled is available from the Library of Congress as well as from other libraries throughout the country (see below for source citation). It is important that you use the information gathered from this database to locate your ancestor in the original record from which this database was compiled. This is because there is generally more information in original records than is in an index. If your local library does not have a copy of the book below cited, inquire at your library about obtaining it though Inter-Library Loan (ILL). Field ExampleName Name of individual naturalized. In some records you will find question marks in the place of the given name or surname. This indicates that the name was not listed on the original record. You may also find question marks in place of missing letters.A question mark after a name indicates that the name spelling was unclear. You may also occasionally find the same record listed in the index under two different name spellings. Please note that not all unusual and uncertain names were noted by question marks, so always be sure to check under various spellings if you are having trouble locating a name. Location Location in Pennsylvania of naturalization. Date Date of naturalization. Source Information Pennsylvania Supreme Court. Persons Naturalized in the Province of Pennsylvania [1740-1773].
