About the Data

This data set contains page images of volumes 1 through 39 of The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine plus four supplements. Published by the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania, the Magazine is distributed semi-annually to its members. This scholarly journal contains articles and information pertaining to Pennsylvania and Pennsylvanians. It contains book reviews, methodological case studies, discussions of major resources, family histories and genealogies, and research guides. Originally published between 1895 and 1995, the essays and articles collected in this data set include information on approximately 343,000 individuals.

The type of information included herein varies greatly and an essay referencing your ancestor may include information from among the following sources: Society of Friends meeting minutes, death records, correspondence, personal histories, census records, church records, pension records, baptismal records, Bible records, passport records, county and township records, land records, marriage records, and family records.

About the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania

Founded in 1892 as a non-profit organization, The Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania was among the first in the United States to recognize the value of collecting and preserving the vital and personal records of those ancestors whose lives now comprise our American History. The Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania is committed to preserving and publishing heretofore unpublished primary sources. The continuing dedication to this service enables the Society to make an increasingly significant contribution to the cultural life of not only Pennsylvania but also the entire United States.

The Society's mission is to promote the use of genealogical information through education, collection, preservation, and publication of related materials, facilitating research and fostering cooperation with similar societies for the mutual benefit of all.

Concentrating primarily on Pennsylvania and its adjoining states, but also including immigration into and out of Pennsylvania, the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania has research materials available to members through the Genealogical Collection at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, accumulated by the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania and the Historical Society of Pennsylvania and maintained in the Historical Society's Library. The Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania also maintains a research room at 1305 Locust Street which contains additional genealogical material. Included are wills, census and tax lists, church registers, funeral, cemetery, and family Bible records, family papers and correspondence, as well as published genealogies, towns and county histories, and periodicals. Comprehensive card catalogs in the Historical Society of Pennsylvania's library at 1300 Locust Street provide an index by surname or locale for most of the collections.

Each year, the Society conducts conferences, alone or in conjunction with other societies, offering lectures for all levels of research. Lectures and/or field trips conducted by outstanding genealogists are sponsored by the Society as well.
