About the Data

This data set is a comprehensive index of more than 600,000 individuals who were found in New York records between 1675 and 1920. The information was extracted from a broad range of records including passenger lists, land records, city directories, and census records. Finding record of an individual in this data set is a great clue because it determines that the person lived in New York at a particular point in time.

Generally, you'll learn the following information about an individual:

  • Full name
  • Event referenced by the record (for example, "Born," "Baptized," "Lived," "Died," "Buried")
  • Year in which the event took place
  • Location or city in which the event occurred
  • County in which the event occurred
  • Source of the record (for example, title, page number, and author of a book)

Some records also include information on a person's occupation, military ranking, title, immigration information, etc. In addition, you may find an "ID number" assigned to an individual by the LDS Church.

With the information provided by this data set you should be able to find your ancestor in other records of genealogical value, which are not necessarily included in this index.

This data set has been produced in collaboration with the Genealogical Research Library under the supervision of Noel Elliot. Many of the source documents are available in their collection. For more information, please contact:
