Immigrants to America, 1600s-1800s
About the Data
United States history is a tale of immigrants most likely your family's story is no exception. Passenger and immigration lists can be an invaluable primary source for tracing the vast majority of immigrants to the United States, particularly in the 19th century. With the single exception of federal census records they are the largest, the most continuous, and the most uniform body of records for the entire country. As primary sources, passenger lists and naturalization records are frequently the only references to an immigrant ancestor's past that can be sourced with high confidence. For American genealogists, these records may also serve as the breakthrough clues needed to link their family trees back to a distant point of origin.
