South Dakota - Marriages (1905-1949)
About the DataThis data set is an index to marriages that occurred in South Dakota between 1905 and 1949. This index was compiled from two sources. The first is from actual marriage certificates (covering 1905-49), and the second is from a marriage certificates index created by the South Dakota Department of Health (covering 1905-14). Information available in this index includes name, age, gender, spouse's name, marriage date, marriage county, and residence. Marriage records are important records for genealogists because they locate individuals in a particular time and place as well as provide details about them and their marriage.
Field ExampleGenerally, you'll be able to find the following information about an individual in this data set:
Name The name of the bride or groom
Age The individual's age at the time of marriage.
Gender Indicates whether the primary individual is male or female.
Spouses' Name Provides the spouse's name of the primary individual.
Marriage Date The date of the couple's marriage.
Marriage Place The county in which the marriage was took place.
Residence May provide both the county and locality or post office of residence.
More About this Data Set
Statewide vital-record registration for births, deaths, and marriages began in South Dakota in July 1905. Some earlier marriage records may be found in the office of the register of deeds of a particular county. Published records of marriages exist for Minnehaha and Pennington counties. Divorce records were recorded statewide after 1905, but earlier ones may be at the clerk of the court in the appropriate county.
