About the Data

This data set is an index to the passenger lists of ships arriving from foreign ports at the port of Galveston, Texas and the sub-ports of Houston, Brownsville, Port Arthur, Sabine, and Texas City, Texas, from 1896-1951.

Information contained in the index includes given name, surname, age, gender, ethnicity, nationality or last country of permanent residence, destination, arrival date, port of arrival, port of departure, ship name, and microfilm roll and page number. If a name of a friend or relative whom the individual was going to join with, or a place of nativity was provided, that information is included in the index as well.

It is important to note that the port of departure listed on these passenger lists is not always the original port of departure for these individuals. A ship could make several voyages throughout the year, making several stops along way. Oft times the port of departure found on these lists is the most recent port the ship was located at prior to arriving at the port of Galveston. Therefore, if your ancestors emigrated to the U.S. from Germany, they could be found on a passenger list coming from Liverpool, England (if, in this case, the ship left from Bremen, Germany then continued on to Liverpool, England before arriving in Galveston).

To learn about researching in passenger records consult John P. Colletta's book, They Came In Ships (Salt Lake City: Ancestry, 1993).

*The first roll of microfilm contains some passenger lists from 1893, but none from 1894 or 1895, so you may find some records with a date of 1893, but that is why the data set title has a beginning year range of 1896.

Field Example

Generally, you'll be able to find the following information about an individual in this data set

Name — Name of the passenger

Arrival Date — Date the passenger arrived at the port of San Francisco.

Age — Passenger's age at time of arrival.

Estimated Birth Year — This is calculated by subtracting the passenger's age at the time of arrival from the year of arrival.

Gender— "Male" or "Female"

Ethnicity — Provides the passenger's ethnic background. On the passenger list this field is often called "Race or People."

Port of Departure — The port of departure listed on these passenger lists is not always the original port of departure for the passengers. This is not always the passenger's original port of departure as it may be the most recent port the individual departed from.

Ship Name — The name of the ship the passenger arrived in Texas on.

Port of Arrival — This will usually be Galveston, Texas, but it could also be one of Galveston's sub-ports: Houston, Brownsville, Port Arthur, Sabine, or Texas City, Texas.

Friend's Name — The name of the friend or relative the individual is going to join in the United States.

Last Residence — - Lists the city or town and/or country the passenger last resided in.

Birthplace — The city or town, and/or country of birth.

Microfilm Number — Provides the NARA microfilm roll number (1-36) on which the individual is found. This number is useful for locating the individual on the actual passenger list. See source information below for full NARA source citation.

Page — This is the page number on the microfilm roll on which the individual is listed on the passenger list. This number is also useful for locating the individual in the original record.
