Census Provide Detailed Records of Ancestors from a Primary Source
January 18, 2000 (FREMONT, CALIFORNIA) Genealogy.com,
LLC, today announced the addition of nine states to its collection
of 1850 U.S. Census images: Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi,
California, New Mexico, Oregon, Texas and Utah. Genealogy.com,
the only provider of online images of actual U.S. Census Schedules,
now offers more than 220,000 images from the 1850 Census for a
total of 18 states. The new 1850 U.S. Census collection is available
on the Internet at http://www.GenealogyLibrary.com,
Genealogy.com's family history subscription service, or on Family
Archive CD-ROMs.
At GenealogyLibrary.com, users can view images of the actual
1850 U.S. Census microfilm images. The high-quality images of
the original registers, recorded in the census taker's own handwriting,
are fully searchable with links from electronic census indexes.
The 1850 U.S. Census is especially valuable since it was the first
census to include the names of all people living in a household,
rather than just the head of the household. This level of detail
gives users of this collection the best and most accurate opportunity
to find ancestors from primary genealogical resources on the Internet.
"The new 1850 U.S. Census collection continues our 10-year tradition
of providing family historians with the easiest and most complete resources
for building their family tree," said Rob Armstrong, Chief Executive
Officer of Genealogy.com. "By providing this graphic and cross-referenced
material online, family historians will save time and eliminate the
cost of visiting libraries across the country. Our goals are to continue
to provide award-winning programs, sophisticated online tools, and be
the site where enthusiasts can get everything they need for researching
and preserving their family history."
Only GenealogyLibrary.com directly links census images to a searchable
index of heads-of-household. By using both a census index and original
census records, family historians can quickly find a name and then see
the original record to discover if that person is an ancestor or just
an individual with the same name. Users have the ability to zoom in
and out, print a high quality image, or save images of a census page
onto their computer for use in a genealogy software program such as
Family Tree Maker. Ultimately, these features save search time and provide
the researcher with a greater degree of accuracy.
On an image of a census page, users will find detailed information
about individuals in a household, such as the county in which they lived,
age, ethnicity, location of residence, property value, marital status,
occupation, names of others in the household and place of birth. These
clues, not listed in indexes alone, give users a great starting place
to search for other types of records such as church and county records
of births, baptisms, marriages, and deaths.
