Most were still at home when her husband died at an early age. During the depression many of the grown children and their husbands with their children moved back into 144 Waverly Pl. Son Frank introduced her to Ma West, her favorite movie star. They had tea together. As Recounted by Rosemary Zoeller, grand daughter. There was no elevator in 144 and it was four stories including the first floor where the kitchen and big dining room was. This was the floor that you entered by going down the steps from the outside and we always referred to that entrance as the airyway. The official first floor was the parlor floor which we kids were not encouraged to frequent. It contained the parlor replete with marble mantle, baby grand piano (your mother's and aunties') and the huge bedroom (which probably in earlier days had been the dining room, and a small sun porch off that which was grandma's bedroom. It also had a full bath. The next two floors had all bedrooms and during the depression, Uncle Frank and Peggy, Rose, Arthur and young Arthur and Paul lived there. Jim was not born yet. Also Uncle Dick and Aunt Amy, Pat and Amy, my parents and Joe and me also lived there. Auntie also had a room on the floor above the parlor floor. We were up on the third floor and the rest of the rooms belonged to students from NYU. I lived there for two or three years and visited there until Grandma sold it. Believe me we kids were all over that place. You couldn't have hidden a bread crumb from us We took over ...there was an apartment house next door that we used to play in ( we knew the daughter of the janitor) and that had an elevator. I will send you some rough sketches of the layout. They will not be architecturally perfect, but you should be able to get an idea of 144 . I'll see what I can do for you for sketches. It was a beautiful old house. All the woodwork on the parlor floor was mahogany. In your mothers room there was beautiful big closet built in with mirrors (beveled) that you could get in to and we kids frequently did when your mother was not around. I wish I could do blueprints. I would love to be able to capture it. Also the banisters were mahogany and the front hall was divine. My mother and Rose and Aunt Amy did all the cleaning and Uncle Jack(grandma's brother) did all the fix up that had to be done. I don't know about the adults but we kids had a ball. 144 Waverly was sold in 1937 (date unknown). Grandma moved to the Waverly on the corner of 6 Th. Ave and Waverly Pl. 7/20/2002 note from Rosemary she sold it in 1937 and moved into the Waverly on the corner of 6th Ave and Waverly Place. She lived there a couple of years before she died. I think she died in 1939. She lived right across the hall from the Fugazys. You may have heard the name Bill Fugazy - he's active in the sports world - or was - he's about 70 now. My mother went to school with Irene Fugazy. -Bill Fugazy at that time, was called "Junie" and Pat had a big crush on him. The story goes that Irene's sister- a beautiful blonde, as was Irene, was found dead of an overdose lying among the guests coat sat a party. So even in those days(probably the early 20s) so even in those days we had the problem!! Irene was a beautiful woman and she married Italo Fugazy who really looked like he crawled out from under a rock. There is no accounting for taste. All this has nothing to do with the subject, but thought you might like a little gossip in there. Grandma had a great life in the Waverly. She had lovely black lady who came in and cared for her - not that she was infim,but someone to do light housework and make her lunch and whatever. Auntie lived there with her and Rose lived nearby with her boys. After Daddy died, we moved to Perry Street and I had to spend my time after school with grandma because my mother didn't get home till six. Joe was going to Power Memorial High school and he didn't get home until late either and I guess Mom thought someone would steal me. I didn't get to my floor plans yet but I will. I have to get my car in for inspection by the fifteenth so that will probably be on the agenda today. I don't remember whether your mother lived there or had she gotten married by then? You will have to do the arithmetic on that one.
