Notes for William John Luther Cliett:
William John Luther was a private in the 12th Georgia Battalion Light Artillery, Gordon's Division, Evans Brigade. He inlisted on September 6, 1863. He was in the hospital in Richmond, Virginia on April 2, 1865. He inlisted late in the war due to his age. (40) He walked from Richmond, Va., to his farm in Columbia County, Ga., because the trains that were running were for the Federal Army and its personnel. He returned to his farm and many of his former slaves were still there. According to oral family history, he told them he had nothing to give them other than an opportunity to sharecrop and to give them his name is they wished to use it.
His widow applied for a widow's pension on August 10, 1903. His company captain, George M Hood, stated that he was indeed in the hospital in Richmond at the time of the surrender at Appomattox. Rosa was living with he daughter and son in law, R.S. Glisson, at the time of the application.
