Descendants of William Bradford Lair Generation No. 1 1. WILLIAM BRADFORD1 LAIR1 was born 1775 in North Carolina1, and died 1863 in Wayne, Kentucky1. He married ELIZABETH BURK1 December 24, 1807 in Pulaski, Kentucky1, daughter of THOMAS BURK and REBECCA TUTTLE. She was born Abt. 1790 in Georgia1, and died 1872 in Wayne, Kentucky1. Notes for WILLIAM BRADFORD LAIR: "Descendants of William Bradford Lair" by John A. Mahey NOTES for William: PLEASE NOTE -- Most of the information on William Bradford Lair and his descendants was developed from original research of Margaret I. Hawk as published in Vol. 3 of her book, "Children and Descendants of James and Rebecca Tuttle," Copyright 1995. Mrs. Hawk's book should be consulted as the definitive publication on the William Bradford Lair family. Although Mrs. Hawk does not cite specific sources, except when using information supplied by other researchers, it may be assumed that her information is based her personal research into census, birth, death and marriage records, as well as personal interviews with living persons. She states clearly in her book that, with some exceptions, she has not searched deeds, court dockets, tax, probate, administrator and guardianship, divorce, church or state or federal pension records. Ann Holder Holmes originally supplied me with much of the same information, apparently extracted from Mrs. Hawk's book, as well as from her original research in Kentucky and elsewhere. Information on the Armilda Lair=Laban Rice Holder line is largely based upon research of Mrs. Holmes and myself. Other researchers, such as Eric Lee, Timothy Hatfield, Irene Martin and others have also shared generously of their knowledge and research. I have attempted to credit others for their contribution in notes to individual records. With few exceptions, information in individual records lacking notes was taken from Mrs. Hawk's book. A valuable bibliography citing primary sources consulted by Mrs. Hawk may be found in her publication, as well as names and addresses of principal contributors. _________________________________________________________________ _ BIRTH, DEATH, MARRIAGE: SOURCE: Margaret I. Hawk. Records of Timothy B. Hatfield, 1993, give birth date as 1777. Will: (Wayne County, Kentucky. Vital Records, Wills, V. 6). Written 2 Apr 1862. Proved 15 Aug 1863. Will mentions daughter, Julia Legran Lair, who was an idiot. CENSUS: 1830 (Lincoln Co.), 1840 (Wayne Co), 1850 (Wayne Co.), 1860 The 1850 census record for James Clark Lair (Wayne County, KY) indicates that his father, Bradford Lair was born in Virginia, not North Carolina. This census lists also a Nancy Lair, born abt 1822. Nothing more is known of her. Bradford Lair purchased land from Thomas Morrow on Sinking Creek (part of Land Warrant 20716, 15 Jan 1831), purchased on 19 Apr 1832. Burial records of Dodson Cemetery lists a James R. Lair 1772 (1782)-1882 who may have been a brother of Bradford Lair. There is also a burial record for Rebecca Lair, wife of J. R. Dodson (1793-1880). Was Rebecca a sister of Bradford Lair? Rebecca's parents were John G. Lair and Harriet N. John G. Lair was a member of the Kentucky Legislature (from Pulaski County) in 1844. Another John G. Lair (Capt.) 13 Feb 1816-7 Jan 1862, is buried in the cemetery at Sinking Creek Baptist Church in Pulaski County, Kentucky. He was cashier in the Somerset Branch of the Farmer's Bank, and in Sept 1847 organized the Fourth Regiment of Kentucky Volunteers. There were also Lairs in Lincoln County, Kentucky and in Harrison County, Kentucky. For the latter, see Connelley, W. E. and Coulter, E. M., HISTORY OFKENTUCKY Vol. III, the American Historical Society, 1920, p. 55, which documents the Harrison County Lairs as descendants of Mathias Lehrer (b. 1714, Germany), who came to Virginia in 1738, m Catherine Meyer, and had nine children. The eldest child was Mathias Lair, a Captain in the Revolutionary War. His son, Charles Lair moved into Harrison County, Kentucky from Virginia. See also McAdams, KENTUCKY PIONEER AND COURT RECORDS, p. 227-228, for the genealogy of this Lair (Lehrer) family. Therefore, the origin must have been occupational. I have traced the family back as far as the seventeenth century (Rhineland , Germany). Lehrer became Lair on 9 July 1799 when Catherine Lehrer signed her last will and testament in Rockingham County, Virginia in the presence of three witnesses. This Anglicizes the German Lehrer to Lair. Dr. Robert E. Lair, Jr. Notes for ELIZABETH BURK: "Descendants of William Bradford Lair" by Margaret I. First, there is the Bradford Lair line, which is the subject of most of the queries on this page. Second, there is the James Lair (sometimes Lear) line, from which I am descended. Is there anyone besides me researching James Lair and his descendants? Has anyone made a connection between these two lines? As background on my line, James Lair (sometimes Lear) had a farm on Beaver Creek and was a Methodist minister who performed many marriages from 1815 to 1834, the year of his death. He was married to Sarah Hamilton, daughter of Charles and Hannah Hamilton. They had four children: William, born about 1810; Charles, born about 1815; Sally, born about 1816; and Nancy, born about 1817. William had moved to Wood Co., TX by the time of the 1860 census. I am particularly interested in making contact with any of William's descendants, although I would welcome a response from anyone who is researching this line. Eric Lee Sun Sep 8 18:07:28 1996 lotus@bcl.net I would like to exchange info with any descendant of William Bradford LAIR and his wife Mary Elizabeth BURK. This couple was located in Wayne County, KY before 1850. They had 12 children. Anyone wanting to share this family history, please get in touch. They went to John Riley Richardson's house that was 3 miles east of the post office at Burnside. John Riley Richardson was born at Burnside, Pulaski, KY. The first time they drove in, the second time the roads were so bad they had to walk in. John Riley Richardson had a nice two story house but no car. They walked or rode horses. Along the road to John's house were many shacks. Billie said that the people in these shacks were peeking around trees to look at them. They were Tamsey's family, the News. Tate New, brother of Tamsey, slept in trees and refused to wear shoes. From Pulaski, Burnside is about 20 miles south. One Richardson owned a saw mill in Monticello, KY. There was a relative that came from Monticello and moved in with Tamsey when she lived on Ideal St. in Seminole, OK. According to Bernice Richardson, wife of Dan Richardson, it was Tamsey's neice (she thinks Sally's girl). She knew a lot about the family. Interview with Ronnie Richardson on Jan. 14, 1999: Ronnie's g-grandfather or g-g-grandfather was Chief of a tribe. He was very wealthy and owned a whole mountain not far from Monticello. KY Ronnie thinks Thomas was ¼ Indian. http://ukcc.uky.edu/%7Eatlas/kyatlas?name=Blaze+Valley 1. Notes for RAYMOND ERNEST RICHARDSON: Lessa, First I have to give you a huge THANK YOU for posting your genealogy of the Richardson family online. I pretty much just started researching this line of my family and your website was a mama-sized pot of gold! Thank you thank you thank you. My great grandfather was Raymond Ernest Richardson, son of John Riley Richardson/Mary Fanny Bell Lair. He is listed on your sixth generation. You don't have any information about Raymond so if you'd like I can send you what I have. Most (all but 2) of his children and even his wife are still living, even though he died in 1982. Also, I have a question. Another person I met online (Alicia Croteau - you have her link on your generation one page) has that Jonathan Richardson (your start person) is the son of Jonathan Richardson who married Ann Edwards. This Jonathan (she has them as I and II, so this would be Jonathan I) is descended from Amos Richardson of Stonington, CT. Is that right? I recently found a "book" about Amos of Stonington and his descendents and there is a Jonathan that has a son of the same name, but he was born before 1697 and according to this book did not marry Ann Massey or Elizabeth Taylor. That can't be the same Jonathan that you start with, who was born in 1715 in VA, can it? Just wondering if you knew anything about that. Thanks again for posting your info, and it is documented SO well. I appreciate it more than you know!! If you would like my info on Raymond's family just let me know.
