Major Samuel Lane, son of Richard and Alice Carter Lane was born about
1628 in London. Samuel traveled with his parents to the Isle of
Providence in 1635 but returned to England by 1657. Major Samuel
evidently removed to Virginia by 1663 when he moved from Virginia to
Maryland. Records state he was "transported to Maryland by Thomas
Vaughn," at which time he was 35 years of age and apparently unmarried.

His double cousin John Lane left him 120L. John Lane's will was made on
September 8, 1670, in London and lists Samuel as a clerk. The term clerk
usually refers to a clergyman. Another reference indicates that Samuel
Lane was a minister at Long Houghton, Northumberland and married to
Barbara Roddam. Evidently a difference of opinion occurred in the church
at Long Houghton and Samuel Lane was "ejected in 1662." His wife was
evidently dead when he came to Maryland.

Major Samuel Lane appears in a number of references in Maryland records.

In September 1681, Maj. Samuel Lane was head of the militia opposing the
Seneca Indians. He had served as Major of Military forces of Colony of
Maryland from 1674 to 1682. He was also a Justice and a Commissioner.
During his lifetime, he was referred to as: gent, chirurgeon, doctor,
doctor of physick, commr. of Anne Arundel county, justice of Anne Arundel
County, gentleman of the quorum and major.

In 1669, he married Margaret Mauldins Burrage, widow of John Burrage, a
quaker who came to Anne Arundel Co. in 1649. She was a daughter of
Francis and Grace Maulden.

9. DUTTON7 LANE (SAMUEL6, RICHARD5, ROGER4, RALPH3, WILLIAM2, ADAM DE1 LA LONE) was born Abt. 1670 in Anne Arundel, Maryland, and died October 8, 1726 in Annapolis, Anne Arundel, Maryland. He married PRETITIA (PRETOSIA) TYDINGS 1693 in Baltmore, Maryland, daughter of RICHARD TYDINGS and CHARITY SPARROW. She was born 1674 in Annapolis, Anne Arundel, Maryland, and died February 2, 1733/34 in Annapolis, Anne Arundel, Maryland.

Notes for DUTTON LANE:
Dutton Lane, son of Major Samuel and Margaret Maulden Lane, was born in
the 1670's in Anne Arundel Co., Maryland. Dutton was about ten years old
when his father died. To Dutton, Major Samuel left 300 acres of
"Browseley Hall." Dutton became a Quaker possibly through the influence
of his step-father, Job Evans whom his mother married after Major
Samuel's death.

Dutton Lane's name is preserved in the Quaker records of the West River
Meeting. He was a witness to three marriages: Daniel Richardson and
Elizabeth Welsh on 4 February 1691 being one of them.

Dutton Lane married 1690-1700 to Pretitia Tydings, a daughter of Richard
Tydings. Pretitia was born abter 1671. Dutton Lane removed to Baltimore
county in the 1690's. In 1694 Job Evans had surveyed in the woods
southeast of present Towson, a 1,000 acre tract called "Friends
Discovery," and five years later Dutton received a grant nearby of 300
acres which he named "Lane's Triangle." He became a deputy surveyor for
Baltimore County, and an odd story is preserved in the county records
telling how in May of 1700 Dutton Lane was one of a party of men
surveying on Thomas Run and Deer Creek when John Howard killed a
rattlesnake and then cut out its heart which he swallowed.

The year 1703 brought near ruin to Dutton Lane. The Annapoli records
show the following suits against him:
Dutton Lane vs Robert Bennett
Dutton Lane deft vs The Crown
Roger Roberts vs Dutton Lane
Richard Bennett vs Dutton Lane
Elizabeth Buckerfield vs Dutton Lane

It was during this time on 11 October 1703 that Dutton and Pretitia Lane
deeded to his brother-in-law, Thomas Tench "Burrage" and "Burrage
Blossom." (Ann Arundell County Land Records 1703, WT# 2; pp. 72-76) A
year later Dutton Lane, Deputy Surveyor of Baltimore County, conveyed to
Benjamin Hooker all his goods, chattels and effects. On 19 July 1702,
Dutton Lane conveyed Browsley Hall to James Butler for 100 pounds
sterling. His Baltimore tract "Triangle" was in the possession of the
heirs of Samuel and "New Yeares Purchase" was in the possession of the
heirs of Richard Tydings.

It was not long after this time that Dutton Lane fled to Carolina.
However, he was back by 1708 when he sold part of "New Years Purchase" to
Thomas Hooker. In 1709 he was a witness to the will of Teague Tracy. In
1712 he was a Deputy Sheriff.

Dutton Lane made out his will in 1716 but it was not probated until
1726. After his death, Pretitia married John Boreing (Boring.) He was
still living in 1741 when he deeded 100 acres on the NE branch of Buck
River to his step-son Dutton Lane.
