Interview with Violet McQueen Northcutt:
Violet was Wilson Lane's favorite grandchild. In all Lane pictures I have Violet is always sitting in Wilson Lane's lap. Cora, Violet's Mother, died when Violet was 8 years old. Cora died at the age of 30 leaving a daughter, Violet, 8 years of age and a son,Wilson "Mac" of 2 years of age. Cora parents were Wilson Lane and Eliza Long (William Carroll; Ranson; Aquilla; Tidence; Richard; Dutton; Samuel; Richard; Roger; Ralph; William LANE) and (Simon; Hiram LONG) Samuel and Cora are buried at Mt. Pleasant, Purdy, Mo.

Violet's aunts, mostly Aunt Rilda, raised her after her mother's death. The entire family gathered every Sunday at Grandpa and Grandma's. Grandma Eliza set a place at the table for every child, if they came or not. The place setting was set with the plate left upside down for that absent family member. I have pictures of the Lane clan gathered at the homeplace. It was a VERY large house for the time, shaped in a L shape it had an entire porch across the back. It was here the pictures were taken with decendents lining the first and second story of the back of the home. It is complete with wash basin and Grandpa Lane's elk head sitting beside him. One picture taken in the front of the house included not only the wife and children but the elk head and his horse. Violet says his barn was the biggest and the best in the county at the time.

After Eliza died Wilson married the maid. All of Violet's aunts had a major fit because Wilson was a hot item in Purdy, Missouri. All the well-to-do widow women were after him. All the women to choose from, and Wilson married the maid. His daughters were devastated and had nothing to do with him afterward. Wilson built a new house in Purdy, Missouri for his new wife and divided his land among his heirs. Violet went to live with Wilson and his new wife against the wishes of her aunts. She had her own room above the parlor, where she was allowed visitors. It even had a player piano in it! I have since visited the home. It is still lived in and in good shape, that says a lot for the quality of home.

OBITUARIES

WILSON LANE

After having dwelt in this land nearly three score and ten years, he crossed the river of death, going hence, from whose borne no traveler returns, to make an accounting for his stewardship in this life and recieve the wages that are due him.
Wilson Lane came to Barry county from Madison county, Ark., directly after the civil war and located near where the town of Purdy is located and homesteaded a home, where he continued his residence until his passing, which occurred suddenly at his home in Purdy, Friday, June 12, 1925, after he had got up in the morning and gone out on his porch. He was well known in that section of the county and other sections.
He was a member of Purdy Lodge A.F. & A.M. , Monett Royal Arch Masons and the Knight Templers and theShrine of Springfield, and was intered Monday, June 15, with the honors of these orders at Mt. Pleasant church cemetery, where funeral services were conducted by Rev. O.M. Smith.
His first wife having died some six years ago, and later he married a second time and this wife, with six children survive him, who are: Mrs Peter Harper of Pierce City; Mrs. Wm. Cowherd and Mrs. Thos. McKee of Purdy and Andy Cowherd of near Butterfield, and Sherd. Lane of Purdy, and Sherm Lane of New Mexico, and one brother, Jerry Lane of Purdy, and was a brother of the late Columbus C. Lane of Monett. He left many grandchildren to mourn his passing.
He delighted in hunting and going on camping trips, remaining a month or more, where deer could be found and always made such fun for his fellow hunters, who were always a good, jolly bunch.

Notes for E
LIZA LONG:
Eliza's father is probably the reason Wilson had so much land. Gene Cowhead of Purdy, Missouri, is also a descendent. He gave me the grand tour of the cemeteries and old homesteads at Purdy. He has done a lot of reseach on this line. He and his wife, Barbara, has spent a great amount of time in cemeteries and visiting old people. They have a wonderful grasp of the history of the people there.

Another home has been broken and saddened by a sudden calling to that sweet land of rest, in that spirit land of eternal felicity in that city on high, where mansions have been prepared for all that have obeyed his will, by accepting him as their personal savior, which she did many years ago and lived a faithful consistent christain life. An excellent wife and loving mother has bid farewell to the earth and gone to her everlasting reward.

Mrs. Eliza Lane, beloved wife of Wilson Lane of near Purdy, was born in Douglas County, Missouri, Sept 15, 1851. In 1865 her parents moved to Barry county and on Feb 9, 1868 she and Wilson Lane were married. To this union were born ten children, six of whom are living, who are: Sheridan Lane, Mrs. Rilda Cowherd, Mrs. Susie McKee, of Purdy, Mrs. Anna Harper of near Butterfield, Sherman Lane of Clayton, New Mexico, and Mrs. Addie Cowherd of Butterfield. She leaves her husband, children, thirty grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, three sisters and one brother to mourn her departure.

Mrs. Lane united with the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in 1871 and lived a zealous and faithful servant of her Christ. She died May 22, 1919 at 11:15pm at her home 1 1/2 miles west of Purdy.
Rev. E.W. Love of Joplin, conducted funeral services on the 23nd at her late home after which the remains were intered in the New Church Cemetery. Cause of death: Stroke
