!Carl Neal's "The McQueen Family" says:
Sam'l E. McQueen had an iron works and he sent his pig iron to Norfolk, Va. a distance of 350 miles. Periodically he rode horseback to Norfolk to collect his money in gold coin which he brought home in his saddle bags. He had slaves to do his work and amassed considerable wealth. According to a 1850 census only two individuals in Johnson Co., TN had real estate whose value exceeded his. They were Mathias N. and Jacob Wagner, brothers, sons of Mathias Wagner who came to Roan Cr. from N.C. Only one had real estate of the same value, Barbara, widow of Leonard Shoun. About 1847 he built and furnished a beautiful home, the first country home in JCT to be built with brick. It is now owned and occupied by his grand-daughter, Mrs. Hodge.
He was prominent in local politics and when the Civil War started he was serving his third term as Sheriff.
Sam'l E. McQueen was a Confederate sympathizer and as such was, during the Civil War, Colonel of the JCT Home Guard. He was associated in working for the Confederate cause with Jacob Wagner, son of Mathias Wagner who came to Roan Cr. prior to 1798 with Wm. Shoun, son of Leonard Shoun and with Greene Moore who married Sarah Shoun, daughter of Leonard Shoun.
At the beginning of the Civil War, McQueen first planned to take his daughters to London for the duration but finally decided to stay home, do what he could for the Confederate cause and to protect his property. He sent his daughters to a Moravian (Pa. Dutch) Girls School at Winston-Salem, N.C.
According to the "History of the 13th Reg. Tenn. Vol. Cavalry, U.S. Army" Sam'l E. McQueen went over to Ashe Co., N.C. where he was arrested by Federal troops in April 1865 and brought back to JCT. He was first made a prisoner under a squad of colored soldiers and ordered taken to Taylorsville. McQueen objected to the colored squad and Capt. Dan Ellis of Co. A, 13th Reg. offered to and did take charge of him. A soldier in Co. A, Hascue Worley, shot McQueen in the back while enroute between Shouns & Taylorsville. "History" continues that it is reported that a Sergeant, W.M. Barry, also shot him after he fell.
After McQueen was killed his home was wrecked, it is reported, by Union soldiers. The windows and doors were torn out and the ceiling and walls shot full of holes. The scars still remain. The furniture was destroyed.
Wm. Kendrick Donnelly, a Union sympathizer was administrator of McQueen's estate and guardian of his daughters. Donnelly's mother was Sarah McQueen Donnelly, a first cousin of Sam'l E. McQueen.
Sam'l E. McQueen married in 1845 Rachel Wagner daughter of Col. David Wagner (1759-1845) and his last wife Margaret "Peggy" Weitzel who was born 1789 the daughter of Adam Weitzel. The Wills, Wagner and Weitzel families and probably the Shoun and Slemp families all first came to Lancaster Co., Pa. from German principalities on the Rhine River. Lancaster Co., was the heart of the Penn. Dutch country and the history of these families closely parallels that of the Penn. Dutch. Rachel Wagner McQueen was born 1827 and died about 1861.
According to the 1850 census Sam'l & Rachel McQueen had 3 children:
Margaret C., born 1846; Josephine, born 1848 and David born in Feb. 1850. Margaret was known as Caroline and Josephine as Martitia. David probably died in infancy.

Samuel's reasons for being a Confederate sympathizer was probably because he had so many slaves. The majority of East Tennessee were for the Union because they were poor and had no slaves. They also realized the competition for jobs that would be created by releasing so many blacks into the job market.
