Descendants of SAMUEL MCQUEEN

18. ORVILLE RISTON "RICE"3 MCQUEEN (THOMAS2, SAMUEL1) was born February 15, 1820 in Carter, Tennessee, and died March 28, 1888 in Purdy, Barry, Missouri. He married (1) ELIZABETH (BETSY) BLEVINS October 5, 1843 in Johnson, Tennessee, daughter of JAMES BLEVINS and NANCY CRAWLEY. She was born April 22, 1821 in Shady Valley, Carter, Tennessee, and died October 10, 1893 in Johnson, Tennessee. He married (2) CAROLINE M. STEWART October 3, 1853 in Lee, Virginia, daughter of JAMES STEWART and MARY. She was born Abt. 1827 in Wythe, Virginia, and died Aft. 1888 in Purdy, Barry, Missouri.

Notes for O
RVILLE RISTON "RICE" MCQUEEN:
Orvel Rice Blevins (McQueen) was not on the 1850 census. Suzanna says he died as an infant. 1840 census listed a daughter between 5 & 10 years old that was not on the 1850 census. 1860 census showed Orville Rice McQueen's son William Hockaday, b. 25-nov-1842 living with them.

Orville disappeared in 1850 from Johnson County, Tennessee and went to Lee County, Virginia. Here he married Caroline which is our line. His first wife's parents raised the children from his first marriage.

Per Suzanne Boulware
Neal says his birthday was Feb. 15, 1822. Claimed his mother was Margaret McQueen when he got his marriage license in Lee County, Va. No father named. Oral tradition in Johnson Co., Tn. says he is son of Thomas & Barbara McQueen. When his first wife was pregnant with David Crockett, Rice abused her with a shoe last and she was "never quite right" after that. Rice left JCT before David Crockett was born.

So Orville and Caroline were living in Lee County in 1870 but not sure where they were in 1880... didn't seem to be in the Rocky Station District in 1880... and James E McQueen came to Missouri in 1884 per your comments... so don't know where the Orville McQueen family was from 1870 one tho would have thought they would have come to Missouri with sons James or George McQueen families... since Martha Elizabeth McQueen came to Missouri when she was 21 and was born in Oct 1863... then the Orville McQueen family must have come to Missouri in late 1864...

23. Judy Kuhn SayHeyJK@aol.com (1). I did a little research for you on
epidemics in the TN area of US. --The great Cholera epidemic was spread
by immigrants from Europe. The major years were 1832, 1849, 1866, and
1873. By 1890, the disease was practically controlled. --Malaria was also of
epidemic proportions in the late 1800's. The hottest summer on record was
1886, and later 1887. Mosquitoes were out of control in the Ohio and
Mississippi Valleys, as well as tributaries. This went on for years. --TB was
also of epidemic proportions at the time. Children ages 5-15 rarely died
from the "adult" epidemics, as this is a period of "Natural Immunity."
--That might be why our grandmothers survived whatever the epidemic was.
I'm still searching...more to come. --Judy K. (2) Judy Kuhn

If James' mother Caroline (Stewart) McQueen died in Barry County after 1888... I would assume she lived either with son James McQueen family or son George McQueen family... but James and family only came to Missouri in 1884... there might be little record of Caroline's being there... the 1880 census record is too early... there are no 1890 census records as all such were destroyed in fire in later years and she was dead by then anyway... there are no microfilm newspapers from the area in the 1888 time period... did not see any record of a Caroline McQueen in the Barry County cemetery books that I looked at...

He is reported to have later lived on lower Doe Cr. Alfred McQueen married in 1848 Rebecca A. Smith (Ezekiel; Jacob; Edward SMITH) & (Ezekiel Smith; Mary Dugger Smith; Julius C.
