Now, I come to the reason Ian asked me to do this paper. How does Peter
Alkire fit into the family? I have just explained how the tax lists suggest three
branches of the Alkire family tree: 1) HARMONAS & LYDIA; 2) JOHN &
CHRISTINA; 3) MICHAEL & CATHERINE. John & Christina left the South
Branch in 1784, resettling near Weston, WVa. Peter, b. 1773, age 11, would
not have been left behind. The Harmonas & Lydia branch moved in waves to
Ky. soon after, are well documented, and did not include Peter. Michael &
Catherine remained in the South Branch, and he (Michael) died there in 1819,
after which several of his progeny resettled in Missouri, including the families of Solomon B. Alkire, Barbara (Alkire) Iman, Elizabeth (Alkire) Drace, and
Michael Alkire, Jr. I believe Peter was an older brother of these, who did not
relocate to Missouri, but who remained in the Valley of the South Branch of the
Potomac. He did name a son Solomon. I would like to see if property records
would not confirm all these relationships, and perhaps some others.

Carl English Porter email info:
Family of Michael & Catherine Alkire which in 1784 constituted 7 white souls, (5 children) since Solomon, Elizabeth, and Barbara were presumably born after 1784, we still have at least three unaccounted for. Land records establish Michael Jr. and Solomon as sons of Michael & Catherine. Family tradition is strong between Barbara and Solomon descendants (both sides) that these siblings traveled together to MO. This family begs for further research. Michael Sr. b. ca 1752 d 1 Mar 1819. I wonder if anybody looked for a probate record. I have also wanted to check relative positions of Michael Sr.'s land. and Peter's land. Perhaps if Mrs. Lancisco was related, the location of that land would also be helpful. (On your site, I learned she is, through the Shobe family.) Checking for War of 1812 records of Solomon, and the officers he mentions serving with, could be a gold mine! We can hope, getting it on the net will provoke some to correct us where we err. Carl

Ian Alkire email info:
The other point I wanted to bring up is that it is -extremely- doubtful
that Hans Michael was Harm. I's dad. I'm not sure where the 1680 b.date
came from, but I do know that he didn't get here until Aug., 1751 in
Philly. Now if he had been b. 1680, & got here in 1751, then he was 71
y.o. when he made the trip. And most folks in this time, @ that age,
would have -not- been making an ocean voyage of that nature. My own
-personal opinion- about Hans Michael is that he was a cousin, or fairly
close relative to Harmonas II. I also "think" he is probably the
proginator of Michael's line. We (Carl & I) do not believe that the
William shown as Harm.I's son actually existed, due to the -very- loud
lack of anything on him, anywhere. Probably another case of "Family
tradition" in full bloom. <BG> Actually, Harm.II's son William is the
one that the only "evidence" of Harm.I's "William" was written about, &
he was enough older from the rest of the "kids" that the Grandkids
might've thought he was a generation older.

The Alkire family apparently lived along the Rhine River. This great
river drains several nations. In addition, the political control of the region
has shifted many times, during the last three hundred years. The Algire family
could hardly be expected to have identified their origin as Germany, for as
Roland Elliott has pointed out, our family came to America many years
beforeb there was a country called "Germany" There was a German language, and the Alkire family lived among those who spoke it. A current European Phone
directory shows an overwhelming majority living in German speaking regions.

I discuss this at "Carl's Corner" To go there, begin at the Alkire

James Mitts email:
Diane's family info that the Alkire's came from Holland struck a chord with
me. As a child I was told that the Mitts' came from Holland. When I go
into researching family history I learned that the Mitts' came from
Germany. But I can guess where the Holland legend came from. Genealogist
James Glacking wrote that my ancestor Adam Mitts came from the Palatinate
of the Rhine. But he, like many others, apparently fled that region.
According to Jim Glacking, Adam came to the port of Philadelphia on board a
vessel that carried passengers from "his native Arnheim-on-the-Rhine".
Arnheim was in Holland and from this, I assume, came the legend that the
Mitts' were from Holland. In tracing one of my wife's ancestors, a book I
consulted told about refugees from the Palatinate making their way to
Holland and eventually to the New World. Similar circumstances may have
resulted in similar legend in an Alkire family that the Alkires came from
Holland.
For what it is worth, James Mitts
