OHN NELSON CROUCH:
John Nelson Crouch, a son of Lewellen and Hannah (Kuhn) Crouch was born 18 Nov. 1851, at Sugar Creek, Gallatin County, Kentucky. He was raised on a farm and did some trapping along the rivers there. He married Laura Ellen Riley, 26 Sept. 1875, in Switzerland Co., Indiana. They wer married by Elias H. Bandarin, J. P.
John and Laura Crouch with their family and a large group of friends left Rising Sun, Indiana in the winter of 1900 for Oklahoma. They came by train, "Te Wabash Cannon Ball." This was quite a ride, the fastest train that ran then. The weather was real cold and stormy when they left Indiana. After leaving Rising Sun, they rode east to St. Louis, Missouri. Arriving there at night, they exchanged trains in St. Louis for one to reach Chandler, Oklahoma. There were 32 people to board the train together. The conductor said it was his first experience where the whole group knew each other.
They arrived in Chandler, Oklahoma, about Christmas time, and was met by George Herbert and sons, Luke and Ollie. They had been living in Oklahoma about a year at this thime. Here the weather was so warm anf pretty they thoughat "they had gotten to Heaven", in Laura Ellen's words. Here, they all found shelter with the Herbert and Rood families until they found homes.
John and Laura settled with their family on a farm five miles north of Chandler, in Lincoln County, Oklahoma. In the fall of 1907, John and Lula (Crouch) Booth and daughter, Myrtle, set out with John and Laura Crouch and son, Andrew, for claims in Ellis County, Oklahoma, near the South Canadian River, about 20 miles north of Higgins, Texas. Jess, Prudie and Emma remained near Chandler until the cotton crops were gathered, then followed. They lived there until 1910, when they went back to Chandler.
Here Jess Crouch and Jess Willard put on an exhibition fight at an old settler's reunion picnic near Chandler in 1912. Jess Crouch age 23 at the time. Willard later became a champion boxer, though wasn't at the time. They fought to a draw, neither giving in.
John and Laura later moved back to the South Canadian River farm. As did Andy Crouch, and lived there until the time of his (John's) death on the 13th of July 1941. He is buried in the Higgins Cemetary as is Laura Ellen Crouch who died on the 22nd of September 1946.
