Notes for Tristram Coffin:
According to Coffin's "History of Newbury", in 1644, Tristram was allowed to keep an ordinary, sell wine and keep a ferry on Newbury side. Again in 1647, Newbury records show that he was allowed to keep an ordinary, sell wine and keep a ferry on the Newbury side.
In 1653, Dionis, Tristram's wife, was presented for selling beer at his ordinary for 3 pence a quart, one pence above what the law allowed. Upon the testimony of Samuel Moores that she put six bushels of malt into the hogshead instead of the normal four, the case against her was discharged.

Richard Knight is mentioned several times in Coffin's "History of Newbury". In 1636, Richard Knight was one of seven men chosen "to order the affaires of the towne." In 1638, Richard, James Brown and Richard Kent were ordered to "gather up the first payment of the meeting house rate and the towne rate...". In 1645, Richard and John Pemberton were appointed to "lay out lots". In 1649 he was on a committee to "view the passages into Plum island...". In 1653, Agnes Knight was "presented" for wearing a silk hood and scarf. This bothered Richard and he asked Edward Rawson to write a letter to the magistrates concerning this matter. In those times a woman could not wear a silk hood and scarf unless her husband was worth at least 200 pounds, and, according to Mr. Rawson's letter, Richard was worth more than 300 pounds. Agnes was acquitted.
