Notes for JOHN PETER EIDEMILLER: The Peter Eidemiller ancestry in Germany research was done by several folks working on the Eidemiller genealogy over the years. Most from Betty Eickhoff and her daughter Lynn Clark. Betty also sent me work from Sarah James, Glen and Bertha Eidemiller, and Maurice Eidemiller. I also found two internet sources- http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/32/742532/6238376335353464.jpg and www.reeg.info/FAM455.HTM . Lived in Miami County near Tippecanoe City, OH. He settled with his family in Ohio in 1839 and came to the U.S. approximately in 1832. The German spelling of his name is Johann Peter Entenmuller also Eutemuller. Peter and Annie made a visit to Germany in 1857, but, during their long absence, their old friends had died or moved away. Their stay was brief, they felt like strangers in a strange land. America was dear to their hearts, and they were glad to return. They were almost shipwrecked on their trip, a violent storm coming up, that lasted two days and nights. Peter was a large contractor and builder of pikes, and in his business made much money. From the notes of Sarah Elizabeth Eidemiller Demming & Mary Elizabeth Johnson (kindly passed on from Eidemiller researcher Scott Beal) "Peter Eidemiller lived near Ginghamsburg and was a Pike builder in Miami County, Ohio. There is still a road running between Troy and Dayton named Peter's Road. It was originally called Peter's Pike. There is a very short street named Eidemiller Road a short distance NW of Tipp City." Eidemiller, made a visit to Germany in 1857, but, during their long absence, their old friends had died or moved away; their stay was brief; they felt like strangers in a strange land; America was dear to their hearts, and they were glad to return; they were almost shipwrecked, a violent storm coming up, that lasted two days and nights; Mr, Eidemiller was a large contractor and builder of pikes, and in his business made much money; he died in 1877 at the age of 76, and his wife in 1879, aged 78 years. Mr. Eidemiller is one of our most prosperous farmers, owning 240 acres of fine land. He and his wife are members of the Lutheran Church, and also of Kentucky Home Grange; he is a conservative Republican, and believes in the greatest good for the greatest number. The amount of stock reared is large, and the income derived from the farm a handsome one; he built five miles of the Piqua and Troy pike, six and one-half of the Troy and Stillwater, two and one-half of the Dayton and Hyattsville pike, and now superintends them for a distance of eight miles from his home. from notes of Sarah Elizabeth Eidemiller Demming: "John was a Pike builder like his father. He built the Troy-Piqua Pike, Troy, Stillwater, and Dayton-Hyatsville Pikes. His home place was a little northeast of Ginghamburg and one or two miles south of present Tipp City. It was a fairly large acreage but I was told that during the Civil War, he lost most of it. One of our distant cousins, Ralph Bernard Eidemiller, finally bought most of it back. His son, Sidney Joe, who lives a few miles west of Tipp City, now owns it." More About JOHN EIDEMILLER: Burial: Maple Hill Cemetery, Section one. Notes for JOHN LOUIS EIDEMILLER: Notes for John Louis Eidemiller: from notes of Sarah Elizabeth Eidemiller Demming: The lived a short distance from Tipp City until 1896 when they moved SW of Pleasant Hill, Ohio. They moved next to a place one mile south and one-half mile east of Covington in 1898; then they moved one and a half miles west of Covington for a year. Their last move in Ohio was to the David Ullery farm, which was four miles north of Covington. This is the place they were living when John died. In the spring of 1907, Estella, having been a widow for about three years, sold their farm machinery and household goods; she, along with Everett, Orville, Harold, and Raymond's family moved out west, finally homesteading in the Fargo community a couple miles south of Wider, Idaho. Glenn remained in Ohio to graduate from Covington High School in the 1907 class. After teaching one year at the #11 school at Clayton, Ohio, he joined the family in Idaho. Estella Eidemiller never married again and lived on the farm the rest of her life. Orville lived with her as he never married. All of her sons homesteaded or bought farms adjoining the original homestead. They alway worked together during the harvest season or when they butchered; the divided up the meat each timeso they would have fresh meat oftener. No one in those days had a refrigeratoron the farm but just cellars to keep things cool. Much of the meat would have to be canned or cured. Estella attended the Fargo Community Church which was Congregational, all her years in Idaho. She was a very mild mannered woman who worked in community affairs, never intefering with any of her son's family's way of life and was broadminded about worldly ways after a very austere Quaker upbringing. More About LAURA ELLA EIDEMILLER: Burial: Riverside Cemetery, Troy, OH Notes for HENRY DAVIS MARTINDALE: Notes for Henry Davis Martindale: from 1909 History Miami Co, pg 486; DAVIS MARTINDALE, owner of a well improved farm of 104 acres in Staunton Township, Miami County, Ohio, comes of a prominent and influential family of the county. He was born on the home fanm in Monroe Township, August 2,1861, and is a son of John and Delilah (Macey) Martindale. His grandfather, John Martindale, Sr., came to Ohio from the East at an early date and settled in Montgomery County, near the Miami County line. There he resided until his death at a ripe old age. John Martindale, Jr., was born on the old home place in Montgomery County, and was one of the following children born to his parents: Robert, Martin, William, Jessie, Samuel, Stewart, Martha, Rachel, Rebecca, Mary, Cynthie Ann,and John. He spent his boyhood in helping to clear the old farm, and received a very limited schooling. Farming continued to be his occupation throughout his active career, and he achieved a higher degree of success than the average. After his marriage, he purchased eighty acres of land in Monroe Township, Miami County, and to this later added eighty acres, and this continued as, his home until he and his wife moved to Tippecanoe City, where they are pending the twilight of life in the peace and comfort of retired life. He became the owner of many valuable tracts in various parts of Miami and Montgomery Counties, aggregating hundreds of acres. He sold each of his sons good farms and still retains more than 500 acres. The foundation of his fortune was two thousand five hundred dollars, and his rise to affluence came through hardwork, foresight and good business judgment. He was united in marriage with Delilali Macey, who also was born in Montgomery County, and their children are as follows: Henry Davis, subject of this record, who has 104 acres located in Staunton Township, two and a half miles southeast of Troy; William, who is the owner of 103 acres in Butler Township, Montgomery County; Warren, who has 111 acres in Monroe Township, Miami County; Edward, whose farm of eighty acres is also located in Monroe Township; and Ella, who is the wife of Samuel Near, of Miami County. Davis Martindale spent his boyhood days on the home farm and, being the eldest child, started in to work for his father when quite young. He started operating his present farm as early as the spring of I883, but did not purchase it until 1893. He has spent about $4,500 in improvements and has a very desirable property in all its appointments. He has always followed general farming along modern ideas, and takes rank among the progressive citizens of the township. He was elected to the Miami County Fair Board in 1907, and has since served capably in that capacity. February 26, 1887, Davis Martindale was united in marriage with Miss Laura Ella Eidemiller, a native of Monroe Township, and a daughter of John and Augusta Eidemiller, who came to this county from Germany. Three children are the issue of this union: Edith, Vernon and Blanche. The subject of this sketch is a Republican in politics, has been a member of the Central Committee since 1908, and has served as school director. He was found by a neighbor, John Eckerly, and Mrs Snyder, who has been assisting in the care of the invalid woman. Despondency over the condition of his mother and the fact that he was unable to secure a young person to take care of her are said to have been the cause of the act. Davis Martindale, of Troy, is a brother-in-law of the dead man. Mrs. Eidemiller, who is now about 82 years old, has suffered several strokes of paralysis, the first occurring some eight or nine years ago. For the past six years she has been a helpless invalid. During all this time the son has given her his personal care, for it has been difficult to secure a nurse. An aged lady, Mrs. Snyder, of Tippecanoe City, has assisted all she could, but she was too frail to handle the invalid woman. Mr. Eidemiller arose about 5 o'clock Saturday morning and went out to the barn. When he did not return two hours later an investigation was made and the body found hanging in the loft. Coroner Troute was immediately notified. EIDEMILLER: Burial: Riverside Cemetery Mausoleum, Troy, OH Notes for IRA BURDINE JACKSON: IRA JACKSON, president of the Board of County Commissioners of Miami County, a body of intelligent and public-spirited men, is a prominent citizen and a representative agriculturist, having resided all his life on a farm. He was born in 1867, in Butler Township, Montgomery County, Ohio, near the line of Miami County. J.L.Jackson, the father of Ira Jackson, was born in Pennsylvania, where he grew to manhood. In 1864 he came to Ohio and located in Montgomery County and still resides on his farm in Butler Township. Ira Jackson was reared and educated in Montgomery County and continued to reside there until after his marriage in 1892. He then moved to a farm in Union Township, Miami County, which he continued to cultivate and improve until 1906, when he purchased his present valuable farm of 175 acres, which is situated in Monroe Township. Mr. Jackson has thus been identified with agricultural pursuits all his life and is one of the leading farmers and stock raisers of this section of Ohio. For a number of years he has made a specialty of Duroc Jersey swine and his annual sale, in February, is always eagerly anticipated by other breeders of fine stock. On December 16, 1892, Mr.Jackson was married to Miss Minnie Eidemiller, who was born and reared in Miami County, a daughter of the late George W. Eidemiller, a well known citizen. Mr. Jackson is a prominent factor in politics in Miami County and has frequently served in offices of responsibility. He was first elected county commissioner in November, 1902, and was re- elected in 1905 and made president of the board, his present term expiring on the third Monday in September, 1909. He is affiliated with the Masons and the Odd Fellows and belongs also to the International Stock Exposition of Chicago and to the American and National Duroc Jersey Association. The distinction of being the most successful breeder of swine in Miami county undoubtedly rests with Ira Jackson, of Monroe township, whose accomplishments in this field of activity have gained him a reputation extending far beyond the limi ts of his county. Like many other specialists in this region he has not confined his efforts to this line, as he is, also a leading farmer, but in his special field he has won his greatest success. Mr. Jackson is a native of Miami county, born January 28, 1867, a son of Jesse L. and Katherine (Smith) Jackson. His father, a native of Pennsylvania, came to Miami county in young manhood and followed farming throughout his life, winning material success and the respect and confidence of the people of his community. One of a family of eleven children, Ira Jackson was reared on the home farm and early began to take an interest in stock raising, paying particular attention to hogs. After obtaining a public school education he entered actively into agricultural work, and in 1907 settled on his present farm, a splendid tract of 400 acres, on which he has recently erected a modern home, attractive in appearance and commodious in size. The improvements on the farm are such as to impress the observer with the progressive spirit and good managemcnt of the owner. For a number of years Mr. Jackson has made a careful study of breeding swine and his animals always bring top prices in the markets. He has also conducted annual sales on his farm, and at a recent sale secured what is supposed to be the highest price ever obtained for a single hog. He has also been an exhibitor at various fairs and expositions, where the stock from the Jackson farm has taken numerous prizes. Primarily a farmer and stock raiser, his private interests have been of a nature to demand the greater part of his attention, but he has not failed in the duties of citizenship, and during the World war was a most generous contributor to the various drives, including the War Chest of Miami county, and especially directed his efforts in behalf of the financial support of the Salvation Army. Mr. Jackson also served efficiently as a member of the board of Miami county commissioners for two terms, rendering his county and his community excellent and conscientious service. He is treasurer of the Jersey Hog Record Association, and his own record as a breeder of swine will be found in the Miami county section of this work devoted to such matters. Mr. Jackson married Minnie, daughter of George Eidemiller, of Miami county. Source: Familytree Maker page of Scot Beal. EIDEMILLER, a well known resident of West Milton, Miami County, Ohio, is engaged in the real estate and insurance business and is also clerk of Union Township. He was born in Montgomery County, Ohio, in 1862, and is a son of Martin and Elizabeth Eidemiller, his father a native of Germany and his mother of Pennsylvania. Martin Eidemiller was two years of age when the family came to the United States and located in Montgomery County, Ohio. There he was reared to maturity and followed farming until his death at the age of seventy-three years. His wife died at the age of fifty-six years. A. G. Eidemiller attended the district schools of his home community, and thereafter taught school and farmed for a period of twenty years. In 1901 he located at West Milton and engaged in the buggy and farm implement business, also dealing extensively in livestock. He continued with good returns until January, 1908, when he sold his interests to Mr. E.L. Miller. He then moved into his present office and began dealing in local real estate and handling fire and accident insurance, representing some of the strongest companies operating in this country. He was elected to the office of township clerk in 1907, and has discharged the duties of his office in a most satisfactory manner. Mr. Eidemiller was united in the bonds of matrimony with Miss. Ella Fouts, a daughter of Aaron Fouts, who died in 1891. They have four children: Lester W., a railway postal clerk who married Miss. Dorothy Becker of Dayton; Neva, who attended Ohio Wesleyan University at Delaware, Ohio, completing a musical and literary course; Aaron Fouts; and Cuba Manila, who is attending school. Politically, the subject of this sketch is a Republican. In fraternal affiliation, he is a Mason and a Pythian Knight. Religiously, he is a member of the Christian Church. OBITUARY in Troy Daily News 08/01/1927: A WISE AND KINDLY FRIEND IS TAKEN At the time this newspaper is facing one loss in the departure of a kindly and co-operating friend, it experiences another in the passing of A G Eidemiller, former county recorder. Mr. Eidemiller was a man of high character and many will be the tributes paid to him for his good qualities and his civic enthusiasm, but this newspaper remembers him more distinctly as one who was ever helpful and considerate and whose assistance was not motivated by any desire except to be helpful and to assist in securing accuracy. Few if any Miami countians of this generation had a wider acquaintanceship throughout the county and as a consequence he was often in a position to learn early of happenings of public interest. During his service as county recorder he could always be depended upon to pass along news items which came to his attention and was always helpful with information and suggestions. His passing is a loss to West Milton and the county and this newspaper feels it also has suffered a loss. SMITH: Notes for George J Smith: from Troy [Ohio] Daily News, July 17, 1916; TROLLEY CAR ROLLS AUTO 100 FEET; KILLS TWO OLD PEOPLE NORTHBOUND D & T CAR AND AUTOMOBILE COLLIDE AT VANDALIA, TAKING LIFE OF GEORGE A SMITH AND WIFE SHARP CURVE IN THE TRACK AUTOMOBILE WITH AGED COUPLE IS DRIVEN DOWN THE LANE OF SMITH HOME AND ONTO TRACK IN FRONT OF AN INTERURBAN ROUNDING BEND George A Smith and his wife of Tippecanoe City were killed at Vandalia at 5:40 o'clock Sunday afternoon, when a Dayton and Troy northbound car hit the automobile in which they were riding, rolling the machine over and over for several yards and throwing the aged couple to the side of the tracks. Peter E Smith, a brother of the dead man at whose home the victim had been visiting, together with his wife and another brother, were witnesses. Mr and Mrs Smith had come yesterday afternoon to Vandalia to stend a few hours at the home of Peter E Smith, who was also being visited by another brother, Alex Smith of Bryan, Texas. Mr Smith drove the machine slowly through a short lane which led from the house to the main road, and the D & T right of way. FAIL TO HEAR CAR- Apparently the couple failed to hear the approaching car, which was rounding a curve near the home, and as they reached the center of the track the traction car, traveling at a rapid rate, struck the runabout squarely and rolled it over for nearly 100 feet. The bodies of the couple were thrown from the tracks and the automobile was demolished. Peter E Smith, his wife and brother hastened to the assistance of the injured couple and, with the assistance of traction passengers and crew, carried the bodies to the barn near the house. Dr William H Riley, of Vandalia, was called, but Mrs Smith had died before his arrival, less than 30 minutes after the accident. Drs Kiser and Hartman, of Tippecanoe City, arrived shortly afterwards, but their combinrd efforts failed to save Mr Smith's life, who suffered a fractured skull and internal injuries, and died two hours after his wife had succumbed. IN FRONT OF HOUSE- The accident occurred directly in fron of Peter E Smith's farmhouse, situated about a half mile north of Vandalia. The curve in the road at this point is of such a nature as to make it almost impossible to observe the approach of a northbound car. Samuel Miller was the motorman and Peter Hand the conductor of the car. The former stated that he blew the whistle before reaching the curve and gave a sharp blast when he saw the automobile on the track and though he applied the emergency brake he could not bring the car to a stop before crashing into the machine. The view of the road at that point is shut off by bushes and evidently Mr and Mrs Smith failed to see the approaching car or thought that they could make the crossing in plenty of time. It is said his brother, Peter, called to him that a car was coming. The automobile was a Saxon and it was completely wrecked. That the street car was going at a rapid rate is attested to by the brother of one of the victims of the accident, who said the runabout in which the couple were riding was turned over several times and carried a distance of nearly a hundred feet before the car could be brought to a stop. The accident occurred near Stop 16, a half mile north of Vandalia. REMOVE BODIES- Coroner McKemy, of Montgomery county, who was notified, went to the scene of the accident to view the remains. Both Mr and Mrs Smith suffered several fractures and both were injured internally. Mr Smith is survived by three sisters and four brothers; Mrs William Keller of North Dakota, Mra Ida Gearhart of Troy, Mrs David Honeyman of Troy, Esta Smith of Tipp City, John Smith of a mile east of GVandalia, Peter Smith of Vandalia, and Alex Smith of Texas. Mrs Smith is survived by two sisters and a brother; Mrs Eli Saunders of Tipp City, Mrs Luther Weaver of near Troy, and Perry Sinks of west of Ginghamsburg. Both Mr and Mrs Smith have lived in the vivinity of Tipp City all their lives. Mr Smith formerly managed a coal office in Tipp. He was a prominent member of the IOOF. The funeral will be in charge of Mr Doom, the husband of a niece of the Smiths, of New Carlisle. It will be held at the Methodist church in Tipp City at 2:30pm Wednesday. v. JOHN HENRY SMITH, b. He removed with his parents to this State in the year 1937, and settled in Montgomery County where he remained until the time of his father's death, which occurred August 29, 1877. His remains are buried in Maple Hill Cemetery, near Tippecanoe, Ohio. Henry remained at home with his father until he reached his twenty-fourth year. His first purchase was the farm on which he now lives, 110 acres, original cost, $4,017.50, now valued at $12,000. The farm is situated on the Miami and Montgomery gravel road, two miles north of Vandalia, and is the dividing line between the two counties; a large and commodious dwelling and barn adorn the place, and the evidence is not lacking to establish the fact that Montgomery County farmers are up with the times. He married Miss Mary B, Eldest daughter of James Madison, of Miami County, December 12, 1860. Five children are the result of this union, four of whom are still living. His wife departed this life November 5, 1873. He was again married to Miss Lizzie Huffman March 4, 1874; three children have been born to them.
