Notes for Mary Leonard Stock: Mollie bore all twelve of her children in the same bed, in the same bedroom, in the same house. Her granddaughter, Ann Maxwell, remembers her as "a short lady and kind of dumpy when I knew her, but who wouldn't be after 12 children and a life of hard work. She never had indoor plumbing or electricity as long as she lived. All of her children were born in the same and same room. I remember her brushing her hair one-hundred strokes every day. She would bend over to brush it and it touched the floor. She wore her hair in the same style from the time she was married until the day she died. Just like in the picture. As long as I can remember her, she had a decubitus ulcer on her leg, which she had to change the dressing and wrap everyday. She would sit in her chair, with her leg propped up to the window for sun on it and would do her Bible reading. She was an excellent cook and there was always an extra place laid at the table in case someone dropped by at mealtime. She used to walk to church at Ashton, if she did not have a ride. Later, she would ride in the back seat of a big Hudson, my grandfather had. (He never learned to drive until after my father drown.) She never rode in the front seat." |
