Notes for Henry Maxwell:
According to Marjorie (Mrs. Leon) Maxwell, "Henry fought at the siege of Fort Donnelson, Tennessee under General Weaver. He was an infantry man. He was hauling supplies from Fort McHenry when they were attacked by the Confederate Calvary. Most of the Union soldiers were killed. Henry and three others escaped by crawling under a supply wagon. One went out the other side and shot the rebel, who was shooting at them. The Union soldiers arrived dispersing the rebels. Henry fought 4 years and never was injured."

According to Ann Maxwell, Henry was a Civil War veteran (Union) as were three or four more of his brothers. He served as a private with Co. D, 83rd Regiment, Illinois Infantry Volunteers. He served August 9, 1862 to May 4, 1863, being discharged with a disability at Fort Donelson, TN. He served a second term from March 30, 1865 to July 12, 1865 with Company I, 106 Regiment IL (from pension record #370145) from the National Archives. Pension records state he enlisted from Woodhull, Henry Co., IL. The Mingo Centennial book lists Henry as serving in the 88th Illinois, Company D.

Less than six months after being discharged, Henry married Irene Snow on January 4, 1866, in Cambridge, Henry Co., Illinois. Within a few months, Irene as expecting their first child, Alice, who was born three days before Christmas on December 22, 1866, in Illinois. While there, Henry and Irene had two more children, Oscar Albert who was born in Clinton, Henry Co., Missouri, on December 11, 1869, and Ida Olive who was born March 17, 1872 in Henry Co., Missouri. With three young children, the family then moverd to Knoxville, Marion Co., Iowa in 1874. Henry and Irene Maxwell had a big fruit orchard on the corner going to the Ashton Chapel. It is spoken of in the Baxter, Iowa History (Ann Maxwell has a copy of it).

In 1909 he went out to Idaho where his son Oscar was homesteading.

Pension records show Henry received $72 per month up until the month before his death in 1921. The tombstone in Ashton Cemetery says his death date is 1921.

Notes for Cassa B. Stock:
Cass, almost three years old at the time, came to Iowa from Summit County, Ohio with his parents, James and Sarah Stock, along with his eight siblings in a covered wagon in 1856.

The 1870 census (pg. 197) shows "Cassa" residing in Clear Creek Township, Jasper County, Iowa.

In the book "Past and Present of Jasper County Iowa" (Gen. James B. Weaver, Editor-in-Chief, Vol. 1, B.F. Bowen & Company, Indianapolis, IN, 1912) on page 1268, it states, "...Mr. Cass Stock died in 1883..." More checking is needed to verify this death date.

Occupation: Lamplighter in Newton, IA83

  Notes for Sarah Jane Leonard:
My great aunt Naomi Ruth Maxwell Sonner told me a story of her grandmother Stock. She said the Sarah? was just a baby when her parents began to travel west from Ohio. The family took ill and died on the way. Shortly before their demise, a young bachelor came along and cared for the baby (Sarah) who was not ill. He joined the next wagon train coming through and offered his help and protection if the family would look after the baby. The family (Aunt Ruth believed their last name was Conner) settled in Iowa and raised the baby as their own. This was Sarah. Whether this story is true or fabricated, I do not know, but Aunt Ruth believed it was so.
In the 1860 census (pg. 99, lines 12-17, taken ??), I found in Clear Creek township, Jasper County, IA the family of John W. Conner (32 yr. old male born in VA) and his wife Catherine (30 year old female - born in VA). Living with them were Elizabeth Conner (16 yr. old female - born in OH), Harriet Conner (13 yr. old female - born in OH), S. J. Leonard (3 yr. old female - birthplace is given as Iowa), and Erlene J. H__mm (8 yr. old female - born in IA). None of the children attended school and Elizabeth could not read or write. This census information seems to lend support to Aunt Ruth's story, HOWEVER, in the same 1860 census, I find in Clear Creek township, Jasper County, Iowa on page 103, lines ??, taken July 12th, 1860 the family of A. Leonard (28 yr. old male, Framer, $1100 real estate, $370 personal estate, born in OH) and his wife, Sarah (26 yr. old female, born in OH) and their daughter, Sarah (3 yr. old female). Also living with them was George Leonard (24 yr. old male, farm laborer, $160 real estate, $270 personal estate, born in OH). Could this be the same S. Leonard who was recorded twice, perhaps while visiting the Conners? What about Aunt Ruth's story? However, she shares the same tombstone with her mother? Sarah Leonard at Ashton Cemtery.

The death date needs more checking. In the book "Past and Present of Jasper County Iowa" (Gen. James B. Weaver, Editor-in-Chief, Vol. 1, B.F. Bowen & Company, Indianapolis, IN, 1912), a biographical sketch of Joseph A. Leonard on pages 1328-1330, it states Mrs. Cass Stock is deceased. However, information from Ann Maxwell gives a death date of May 5, 1941.
