Notes for Sarah McCloughan: Sarah and her husband James loaded their belongings and nine children in a covered wagon and set out from Summit County, Ohio for Iowa in 1856. In the 1878 History of Jasper Co., Iowa, a biographical sketch of James Stock, Sr. on pages 604-605 states, "STOCK, JAMES, Sr.; S. 35; P. O. Clyde; born in Liverpool, England, Aug. 15, 1815; came to Ohio in 1836; followed the butcher business in England; remained twenty years in Somerset Co., Ohio, and thence to Iowa in 1856; he improved his farm of 220 acres, Valued at $40 per acre; has good buildings, bearing orchard, etc. He married Sarah McCloughan March 21, 1839 in Ohio; she was born in Pennsylvania, in 1817; they had eleven children, two dead - Catherine, Elizabeth, Sarah Ann, Mary, James, Jr., Z. T., Casibanca, Richard, George W., N. D. and Garibaldi; Richard enlisted in the 10th I. V. I.; served two years; received a severe wound at the battle of Shiloh; a large minie ball passing from the right ear through the head, and coming out of the left eye; he was discharged by reason of the wound. Mr. Stock is an industrious, respected and generous man, and a Greenbacker." In the book "Past and Present of Jasper County Iowa" (Gen. James B. Weaver, Editor-in-Chief, Vol. 1, B.F. Bowen & Company, Indianapolis, IN, 1912), a biographical sketch of Thomas A. Streeter (who married James's daughter Elizabeth) on page 1266-1268 states, "To Mr. and Mrs. James Stock eleven children were born, namely: Mrs. Catherine Priest, born March 1, 1840, died August 19, 1911; Mrs. Elizabeth Streeter, of this sketch; Richard, born November 30, 1842, is deceased; Mrs. Sarah Ann Streeter, born July 7, 1844, is living in Clear Creek township, this county; James, born in 1845, lives in Jasper county; George Washington is also living here; Mrs. Mary Evans lives in Colfax; Zachary T. lives in California; Mr. Cass Stock died in 1883; Mrs. Ann D. Day, of Marysville, Missouri." |
| i. | Catherine Stock155, born March 01, 1840155; died August 19, 1911155; married Unknown Priest |
|
Notes for Unknown Priest: There is a Joseph Priest in Co. E. of Iowa's 13th Infantry (the same Co. as William Stock) who enlisted 10/19/1861, was wounded at Shiloh, and disd. 2/15/1862. It is unknown if this as the "Priest" married to Catherine Stock, but bears checking since thi Co. as made up of men from Jsper Co., IA where Catherine's family lived. It is unclear if William Stock was related to Catherine. He was not her sibling. |

Notes for Elizabeth Stock: Elizabeth came to Iowa from Summit County, Ohio with her parents, James and Sarah Stock, along with her eight siblings in a covered wagon in 1856. Her sister, Sarah Ann Stock, married her brother-in-law, Edwin Streeter. In February of 1861, Elizabeth married Thomas Streeter. Elizabeth conceived soon thereafter, but life was about to change. The war broke out. According to notes from Ann Maxwell, "Thomas Streeter, a brother, and four brother-in-laws (Richard Stock, Joseph Stock, Thomas Stock, and William Stock) from the Clyde area walked to Iowa City to enlist in the Union Army at the outset of the Civil War. He entered at the age of 22, listing his residence as Clyde, Iowa and place of nativity as Pennsylvania. He enlisted on August 11, 1862. On August 22, 1862, they were mustered in at Camp Pope near Iowa City. (Other records show he was mustered in on September 13, 1862.) Thomas was assigned to Company E, 40th Iowa Volunteer Infantry ASL. Some of the battles Corporal Streeter participated in were: Siege of Vicksburg, Capture of Little Rock, Oklahoma, Elkins Fors, Prairie D'Anne, Mascow, Camden, Mark Mills, and Jenkin's Ferry. On February 16, 1865, he was promoted to 7th Corporal. He was discharged at Fort Gibson in Indian Territory (Cherokee Nation) and mustered out on August 2, 1865." Thomas returned home to Elizabeth. Thomas and Elizabeth Streeter had seven children altogether, four of which died young. It appears only one child, Lydia Streeter, made it to adulthood. In the 1878 History of Jasper Co. Iowa on page 605, there is "T. Streeter", a farmer in Sec. 16 of Clear Creek township listed with a P. O. at Clyde. This is most likely Thomas Streeter, Elizabeth's husband. The Stock family is also listed in this same area. In 1928, Thomas and Elizabeth celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary at their home in Mingo, Iowa (300 E. Main Street), now the home of their granddaughter, Lena Funk Burns. |

Notes for Thomas Ambrose Streeter: According to notes from Ann Maxwell, "Thomas's parents, Henry and Lydia (Faulkner) Streeter, came from New York State to Yorktown, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, in 1840, the year Thomas was born. They moved to Ohio when Thomas was four years old; this would be about 1844 or 1845. In 1858, as Thomas neared his 18th birthday, Henry and Lydia Streeter purchased an 80 acre farm in Clear Creek Township from Jacob Penrod. The deed is dated April 24, 1858. They raised their family of 10 children (one girl dying in infancy) in Jasper County, Iowa." In the 1878 History of Jasper Co. Iowa on page 605, there is "T. Streeter", a farmer in Sec. 16 of Clear Creek township listed with a P. O. at Clyde. This is most likely Thomas Streeter. Thomas's brother Edwin married his wife's sister, Sarah Ann Stock. In February of 1861, Thomas married Elizabeth Stock. Elizabeth conceived soon thereafter, but life was about to change. The war broke out. According to notes from Ann Maxwell, "Thomas Streeter, a brother, and four brother-in-laws (Richard Stock, Joseph Stock, Thomas Stock, and William Stock * ) from the Clyde area walked to Iowa City to enlist in the Union Army at the outset of the Civil War. Some of the battles Corporal Streeter participated in were: Siege of Vicksburg, Capture of Little Rock, Oklahoma, Elkins Ford, Prairie D'Anne, Moscow, Camden, Mark Mills, and Jenkin's Ferry. On February 16, 1865, he was promoted to 7th Corporal. He was discharged at Fort Gibson in Indian Territory (Cherokee Nation) and mustered out on August 2, 1865." Thomas returned home to his wife. Thomas and Elizabeth Streeter had seven children altogether, four of which died young. It appears only one child, Lydia Streeter, made it to adulthood. * In the book "Past and Present of Jasper County Iowa" (Gen. James B. Weaver, Editor-in-Chief, Vol. 1, B.F. Bowen & Company, Indianapolis, IN, 1912) on pages 1267-1268, it lists the children of James Stock and Sarah McCloughan as Catherine, Elizabeth, Richard, Sarah Ann, James, George Washington, Mary, Zachary T., Cass, and Ann. No mention is made of Joseph, Thomas, or William as children of James & Sarah Stock, so perhaps other Streeter women married Stock men who were descended from other parents. In the 1878 History of Jasper Co., Iowa on page 605 it states, "Richard enlisted in the 10th I.V. I.; served two years; received a severe wound at the battle of Shiloh; a large minie ball passing from the right ear through the head, and coming out the left eye; he was discharged by reason of the wound." This is from a biographical sketch of Richard's father, James Stock, Sr. The eleven children listed (two of which are said to be dead at the book's writing) are: Catherine; Elizabeth; Sarah Ann; Mary; James, Jr.; Z. T.; Casibanca; Richard; George W.; N. D.; and Garibaldi. Again, no mention is made of Joseph, Thomas, or William. Past and Present of Jasper Couty Iowa by Gen. James B. Weaver, 1912, lists on pge 217 that "E. M. Streeter, T. A. Streeter," and "Thomas Stock" were part of the 40th Infantry, Company E. E. M. Streeter would be Thomas's brother Edwin Murray Streeter, but at this time (March 1999), more checking is needed to determine if Thomas Stock is related somehow to Thomas's wife Elizabeth Stock. In 1897, Thomas was on the building committee to raise funds to build Ashton Chapel in Ashton Cemetery in Clear Creek Township, Jasper County, Iowa. People in the community had circulated a petition, donating either labor or money. The first Sunday in April of 1898, the Ashton Chapel was dedicated. On September 26, 1919, he certified the signatures of the Judges and Clerk of Election for a bond election. In 1928, Thomas and Elizabeth celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary at their home in Mingo, Iowa (300 E. Main Street), now the home of their granddaughter, Lena Funk Burns. Thomas and Elizabeth bought it in 1917 when they moved to Mingo. "It has been remodeled twice over the years. It will be kept in the family as my (Lena Funk Burns) older daughter Jacqueline Mae Osborn will receive the property." Thomas was active in organizing the Mingo Grand Army of the Republic Post, known as E. H. Keys Post 511. At the time of his death, he was the last member of the post. In the book "Past and Present of Jasper County Iowa" (Gen. James B. Weaver, Editor-in-Chief, Vol. 1, B.F. Bowen & Company, Indianapolis, IN, 1912) it states, "Thomas A. Streeter This honored pioneer is to be designated as one of the progressive and influential citizens of Clear Creek township, Jasper county, where, for more than half a century, he has maintained his home, figuring as one of the builders of the community and is especially worthy of consideration in this work. In many ways he has lent his time and influence in the promulgation of various uplifting movements, and he ably served his country during the Civil War. Mr. Streeter was born in Luzerne county, Pennsylvania, September 15, 1840. He came with his parents to Ohio when four years old, coming on with the family in 1858 to Clear Creek township, Jasper county, Iowa, and with the exception of three years spent in Missouri he has continued to reside here. He is the son of Henry and Lydia (Faulkner) Streeter, both born in the state of New York, the mother in Delaware county, on October 28, 1811, and the father was born on November 15, 1808. They grew up in the Empire state and there were married and spent the early part of their lives, coming to Jasper county, Iowa, in an early day and developed a farm, dying in Clear Creek township, the mother on November 29, 1877, and the father on June 21, 1892. Their family consisted of the following children: Mrs. Mary Ann Beard-Stratton, born in New York, April 24, 1835, died May 2, 1912; Mrs. Eurelia Jane Ashton, born January 12, 1837, died March, 1912; Mrs. Eliza Emeline Harsh-Cox, born May 19, 1839, is living in Colfax; Thomas A., of this sketch; Edward Murray, born November 2, 1842, died June 8, 1910; Chloe Adelia, born January 17, 1845, died in infancy; George Henry, born September 27, 1847, died in Des Moines in 1902; James Monroe, born November 11, 1850, is living near Denver, Colorado; William Anson, born March 30, 1853, lives near Omaha, Nebraska; Mrs. Lydia Rosella Snyder, born August 30, 1856, is living in Colfax. These children were reared in Jasper county, Iowa. "Thomas Streeter grew up on his father's farm and worked hard on the same when a boy, experiencing the usual hardships of the average boy in a new country. On February 7, 1861, he was united in marriage with Elizabeth Stock, who was born in Summit county, Ohio, September 22, 1841. From there she came with her parents, James and Sarah (McCloughan) Stock, overland to Jasper county, Iowa, in 1856, this being one of the pioneer families here. Her father was born in England, August 1, 1815, and her mother was born in Pennsylvania, August 29, 1818; they spent the latter half of their lives in Clear Creek township, this county, the death of Mr. Stock occurring in August 1902, his wife having passed away on February 8, 1899." "Mr. Streeter enlisted for service for the Union at Clyde, this county, and was mustered in at Camp Pope, Iowa City, August 22, 1862, and he started to the front as corporal of Company E, Fortieth Iowa Volunteer Infantry, in which he served with much credit until the close of the war, when he was honorably discharged at Fort Gibson, Indian Territory. He participated in the engagements at Okalona, Elkin's Ford, Prairie D'Anne, Moscow, Camden, Marks Mill and Jenkins Ferry. "Mr. Streeter has devoted his life to farming and he is the owner of forty acres in Clear Creek township where he has a pleasant home and on which he has made a good living. "Politically, he is a Democrat; he has been road supervisor and school director. He is a member of the Grand Army of the Republic, the E. H. Keyes Post at Mingo. "Mr. Streeter tells many interesting things of the early days here. Something of the hard life of those who braved the wilds of Jasper county may be gained from the following incident, one of many in his experience. When a young man he started to mill with eighteen bushels of buckwheat, which he first hauled to Newton and back, thirty-two miles; then to Des Moines and back, fifty miles; then hauled it to Peoria, Polk county, and from there to Pella to be ground, later returning for the ground product, making in his last trip one hundred and eighty miles or a total distance of two hundred and sixty-two mlies(sic). Few of the rising generation would have the courage and stick-to-itiveness to succeed in a country where such trials were common." |

Notes for Edwin Murray Streeter: Notes from Ann Maxwell state that she has a letter in her file "from E. M. Streeter, Camp Matterson, Paduca (sic), KY to Jane Streeter, April 28, 1862." I wonder if "Jane" is his sister Eusebia Jane. Her notes also state, "Edwin (or Edward) was a member of the G. A. R. (Grand Army of the Republic). During the Civil War he was a Private with his brother, Thomas Ambrose, in Company E 40th Iowa Infantry (5th Co.). He enlisted August 11, 1862, mustered in September 13, 1862 and was mustered out August 2, 1865 at Fort Gibson, Cherokee Nation. His age was 19; his residence was Clyde, Iowa; Nativity: PA." There is a G.A.R. maker at his grave in Ashton Cemetery. Past and Present of Jasper Couty Iowa by Gen. James B. Weaver, 1912, lists on pge 217 that "E. M. Streeter, T. A. In the Mingo Centennial book (1984), on pg. 98 articles from The Weekly Clipper; Colfax, Iowa; Clyde News give the following account, "September 20, 1884 - The sorghum factories are running day and night. Sam Jackson made over 300 gallons of molasses. Mr. Tyler's mill has been running a week. E. M. Streeter's mill started today. William Harper has leased George Harsh's mill and will open soon." |
