TOMBSTONE: Albert N. Atkinson; b. 27 Feb 1840; d. 24 Dec 1896
(bd. beside his wife, Sarah, who has no stone)

Emma Catherine Atkinson, Dau. of Albert said he was a rock mason and had
carved his own tombstone. It was inscribed Albert N. Atkinson, born 27 Feb
1840, died 24 Dec 1896. He died of "Rock Consumption" and used to spit up bits
of rock dust. (Evidently he had TB) He built the chimney on their home in
Hasse, TX and the water well also. It is not known if he built the house, but
it was still occupied in 1960 and the well was still in use. We talked to the
woman who lived there and took pictures of the place. (See photos).
Gladys Atkinson said he began studying to be a doctor like his father, but
changed over to veterinary medicine, then ended up a rock mason. Evidently he
didn't finish his training. The 1880 Census states that he was a farmer. In
Quincy, IL., where Albert's mother lived her last 10 years, there lived a Wm.
Atkinson whose profession was a brick mason. I wonder if they are related.
Albert died on Christmas Eve when my grandmother, Emma, was only four years
old and then she lost her mother only eight years later. She lived with some
of her older brothers and their families until she married (see census).
His wife, Sarah Amanda, "Mandy", was buried beside him in the Sardis
Cemetery, in Hasse, TX. A marker was never placed at her grave.
In 1972, someone told of an elderly woman who had lived her life in the
Hasse area, who said that Albert Atkinson was the best stone mason she knew and
his wife was the best cook.
James Albert or "Jim", son of Albert Neale, said that his father was
disinherited for marrying a Scotch woman. If this was the case it would have
been done by his mother because his father was dead when he married. Jim said
he was the last child of his parents to be born in Quincy, IL and his brother,
Bill, was the first born in Texas which means they went to Texas between 1876
and 1879.
His daughter, Emma, said she thought there was a daughter between her and
Tom that died in infancy. Orine Menn, a granddaughter of Albert, sent a record
of a son, Douglas, who died in infancy. It is possible that two infants could
have been born between Tom and Emma. (BR)

!LETTERS: 21 Sep 1955; 3 Feb 1961; 14 Mar 1961; 21 Feb 1974; 20 Mar 1974; (Fam.

LETTER: James Albert Atkinson, Woodson, TX - 21 Sep 1955
My grandfather Atkinson was an English Duke. He was born in England.
My Grandmother Atkinson's name was Emma. She was born in England. My Grandpa
Johnson was born in Arkansas. My father Albert Atkinson died and was buried at
Comanche, TX. (Sardis Cemetery) My father and mother just lived in Illinois.
Charlie Atkinson married Emma Copeland. Aunt Annie and I married 9 Dec 1896.
Bill Atkinson married twice. His last wife was Marie Walker. Edgar Atkinson
died in 1945. Edgar married Willie Hawley around 1888. Tom Atkinson married
Grace Essary. She lives at Throckmorton now. (These are answers to questions
I asked.)

!LETTER: Nita Hurford, Woodson, TX - 3 Feb 1961

LETTER: ... I think the folks are buried at the old Sardis graveyard around
Hasse which is near Comanche, TX. Ma. Gardner knows. I guess Grandpa and
Grandma Atkinson and Bessie (Aunt Annie & Uncle Jim's little girl) are buried
there. Also, Pa's daddy, Robert Warren Gardner, but I don't know if any of
them have tombstones or not.

!LETTER: Mae Atkinson, Woodson, TX - 14 Mar 1961

...Jim says no one but his daddy, who is buried at Hasse, has a tombstone. His
mother is buried beside his daddy. He died at 59 and she at 62. She died
several years after him. His papa died one year before their (Jim & Annie's)
oldest child, James Lester, who is 63 this September, was born. So he must
have died in 1896. His (Jim's) mother died after he had three children which
would be 1902 as close as we could figure.

!LETTER: Orine Menn, 302 E. 3rd, Bishop, TX 78343 - 21 Feb 1974 - Ph. #584-2319

...Most of what I am sending is of Charles Henry Atkinson's family and most of
these live in South Texas in and around here. You may use it any way you like.
I made notes and addresses on some of the pages. Correct it and send me any
corrections. Which of Charles Henry Atkinson's brothers is called Uncle Ed?
Aunt Effie speaks of an Uncle Ed. His granddaughter, Eula Mae, married Buford
Hagood, and I knew their daughters, Christine and Fannie Sue, and met the
the mother one time years ago in Lubbock, TX. (Orine sent many pages of
descendants of Charles Atkinson.)

!LETTER: Orine Menn - 20 Mar 1974

... What I have, I received from Gladys Atkinson and I believe she got it from
your grandmother or someone else. She had been working on the family tree, but
was doing it in a work book & had it all mixed up & very hard to understand &
with a room full of people and limited time makes it harder to get the correct
facts.

!LETTER: Emma Gardner

... My mother's maiden name was Johnson. Uncle Jim might remember. You can
write Charlie's girl about where Charlie and his wife were married and who she
was before they married. I have not seen them since I was a small child. Her
address is Mrs. Effie Griffith, Calallen, TX. You can also write John's girl
and find out about him and his wife and where they married. Of
course they are both dead. Her address is Mrs. H. M. Meredith, 716 W. Cherry
St., Paris, TX. Yes, Brother Harry's wife was a sister to brother Scoot's
wife. She was a Hawley, but I forgot where Harry died. Willie Atkinson might
know.

NOTES: Charlie's boy, Jasper Atkinson, lives at Post, TX. Charlie Atkinson &
family live at Calallen, TX. His boy, Albert, died shortly after the time
Lester Atkinson married Mae. Tom Atkinson died at Olney, TX. James Atkinson
died at Olney, TX. Minnie, Claude Atkinson's wife, lives at Dickens, TX.
Clara Morris Atkinson was born at Dublin or Gustine, TX. Jonathan Atkinson's
daughter's address at one time was Mrs. H. M. Meredith, 1622 Houston St.,
Paris, TX. (I wrote in 1972 or 1973 & letter was returned. I, also, wrote to
her at Rt. 6, Paris, TX in 1973 and received no answer.) James Albert Atkinson
said that his mother had a brother named James and that his mother's father's
name was John or James Johnson. He said that his Grandma Johnson was buried at
Sardis Cemetery near Comanche, TX. (I wonder if he meant his mother.)
Charlie Atkinson's wife, Kate, died about the time of Martin Gardner's death on
19 Mar 1965. She was 91 years old.
