In 1977 we learned fron the 1880 Federal census of Matteawan, Ny that rufus BAker had been born in Connecticut, and his wife Ellen had been born in Ireland. Both of his parents had been born in Conn., According to the same census, and hers were born in Ireland. We then learned conciderably more from the death certificates filed in New York State for both Rufus and Ellen. (According to her more research was planned)

RUFUS BAKER Died 11 June 1896 at Matteawan, NY of Bright's Disease and Dropsy ( Congestive Heart Failure) at age 80 years 3 months, 13 days. He was born in Conn. His parents Were NATANIEL BAKER and SARAH (_____) BAKER of Conn. He had been ill for about a month, and died at 8 AM. He was buried at St Lukes Episcopal Churchyard about 25 yards from the rectory. A widower.

ELLEN BAKER d. 13 April 1886 at 12 PM of Phthosis, in Matteawan, NY at the age of 71 years 9 months 6 days. She was born in Ireland, the daughter of WM McCREARY and his wife MARY BURR. She was buried at St Luke's churchyard Apr. 15, 1886.

Rufus Baker was a master carpenter, born in Conn., and removed to New York State. He had lived in Balmville, NY When his son Joseph Frederick Baker was born in 1859. He built his home on Union Street, Mattewan NY about 1875 or before. Both Rufus and Ellen are buried in a family plot at St Luke's. The first burial in this plot was on May 30, 1838 when William Stevens was interred. Relationship uknown.
Another interment in the family plot was that of CORNELIUS LADUE b. 21 July 1830, d. 18 April 1903, said to be family friend.
