THE BATKIN FAMILY OF ENGLAND AND THE UNITED STATES.

Updated June 29, 2009

About Our Family Research

These pages are the result of many hours of work involving visits to family history centres, graveyards and simply pouring over various computer databases. Before going any further i have to thank my wife Sue for all her dedication to the cause of finding out the Batkin family history. Since starting this, several years ago, our lives have changed quite considerably following my early retirement after 42 years with the GPO/BT. We sold up and moved. Not just down the road but crossed the pond to the United States. It is a sad fact but the Batkin family is now scattered across the globe with very few left in England. Most of the reason for this is pure economics. Life in the UK has not always been kind to the family and such things as the industrial revolution, the social conditions and pure ill fortune have conspired to ensure that the search would not only be long but would involve quite a bit of travelling. The name Batkin has had several spellings over the centuries including Batkynne, Batkyn and finally Batkin. It is believed that the name derives from "Son of Bartholomew" although this may be open to conjecture, it seems quite logical. What we do know is this, the family seem to have started around the North Staffordshire village of Fulford and surrounding districts. We now know of family in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand to name but a few. The family have been (and still are) farmers, potters, in the beer trade and hairdressers. We have heartrending tales of transportation to the colonies, Industrial accidents, family break ups following the death of a parent and many other tales.
