Dr. H. X. Richardson

Dr. H. X. Richardson, of Fowlkes Station, Tenn., was born in Tishomingo County, Miss., December 13, 1856; son of W. F. and Lucinda Richardson. The father was born in Lexington District, S. C., in 1818, and was of English descent. In 1825 he moved with his parents to northern Alabama. Here his father died in 1828, and he and his mother then moved to Tishomingo County, Miss. Here he married a year later and moved to McNairy County, Tenn., in 1858, where he purchased 160 acres of land. He now owns 700 acres, which he has earned by the sweat of his brow. In early manhood he taught school, and in 1846 was licensed to preach, and from that time until 1854 was an active worker in behalf of Christianity, advocating the Methodist Episcopal Church South doctrine. In 1854 he was admitted to the Memphis conference and traveled for several years, but owing to ill health was compelled to give up this work, but has preached since, when able. He is the father of six living children, all of whom have taught, or are teaching school. He lost his wife in 1865, and four years later he married Mrs. M. J. Mayfield, nee M. J. Rogers.

The subject of our sketch was educated in Jackson District High School, Montezuma, Tenn., and Corinth, Miss. At the age of twenty-three he began teaching school and taught at different times for two years. During this time he began the study of medicine, his preceptor being Dr. J. M. Taylor, of Corinth, Miss., and later finished his medical education in the University of Nashville and Vanderbilt University of that city. In the winter of 1883 he located near Fowlkes, Tenn., and in 1885 moved to the station, where he has secured a lucrative practice. In politics he is a stanch Democrat, having cast his first vote for Gen. Hancock in 1880. He is a strictly moral kind and courteous gentleman and fully deserves the success that has attended him.

1891 - Dr. H. X. Richardson living in District 12, Dyer County, Tennessee, age 34.

Fowlkes Station

Fowlkes Station, on the railroad, five miles south of Dyersburg, was founded in 1882 by W. P. Fowlkes. The business men are Miller & Son., J. C. Miller, W. C. Miller, Nathan McCoy and T. J. Fitzchew, all general merchandise; King & Tumley and Miller & King have steam grist-mills and cotton-gins. Dr. H. X. Richardson is the one practicing physician. Fowlkes has about 150 inhabitants.

On the 1900 US Census and found Hezekiah and family living in Tunica County, Mississippi.

Notes for C
HRISTIAN DAVIS GUSTAVOUS ADOLPHUS RICHARDSON:
Uncle Dolly wanted to be called "Gus" but it didn't fit him, so they called him "Dolly," which was short for Adolphus. (Cecil Binford)

A newspaper article, written when C. D. was age 76, tells that C. D. Richardson lived at 1442 NW 51st Street (does not give town, tells of nearby towns of Britton and Bethany. C.D.'s letterhead address is Oklahoma City, Oklahoma). About 25 years prior to the article, C. D. had a stroke of bad luck. He could not afford a car to pursue his profession, which was debt collection, so he bought a bicycle. After several years, he was able to buy a car, but didn't, preferring instead to use the bicycle. He said, "I was never strong when I worked in the office, and that stomach trouble I used to have..."

Richardson said that he had only one accident about two years prior.

He speaks of visiting his sister Mattie before she died, and also visiting his nephew, Pearl Richardson. He expresses some confusion about being related to "Jack Richardson" who was his nephew, Jewel Moser Richardson.

C. D. Richardson, who signed his letter, "Uncle Gus," wrote to Roberta Dukes Richardson 22 Jun 1935 about having seen P.O. Richardson in regard to the family tree. This man gave him the address of M. Richardson of P. O. Box 95, Caddo, Texas, who "has a complete tree of their family, and if he is correct that we are related, possibly he can give you the information you want. Says his grand father was named Isom."

C.D. continues, "You might tell him that our grand father married a Jones, and that she had a brother Sam Jones who lived to be near a hundred the last account of him. We also had an Uncle Levi who lived in Ga. (This is Levi Richardson.)"
