2. MARY² CONWAY (JOHN¹) was born 14 Jan 1755, and died Aft. 1780. She married JONATHAN W. LONG Unknown in 4 other children. He was born Bet. 1745 - 1755, and died Aft. 1780.

The parentage of Mary Conway is deduced from various clues.

Mia Fleegel's notes show a birth date of 14 Jan 1755.

Notes for JONATHAN W. LONG:
Grandmother Richardson had notes that indicated that this man's name was John Long. The Draper Manuscripts say Jonathan Long as well as give the initial "W." for a middle name. She also had John Long's wife as Jane Conway, which is not born out by documents found thus far, but rather, is Mary Conway.

Information on the birth date and location of Rhoda Long is confirmed by the family Bible of Vada Grounds of Smith's Grove, Kentucky, sent to Grandmother. No copy remains -- just the reference in her writing.

Jonathan Long probably died by 1830. He may have been born in Virginia, and moved to Mercer County, Kentucky, where he lived until at least 1780. A John Long is found in Mercer County, Kentucky, on the 1800 Tax list. A John Long living in Franklin County, Kentucky, filed for pension in 1819 based on Revolutionary service as a private in the Virginia Line. He was age 69 at that time, and died 7 Feb 1820.

A tentative father of Jonathan Long is Henry Long. Clues to his identity may be obtained from the Draper Manuscripts, 24S173; 8/214:7, which states, "Early in 1796 Lawrence Long & his son Reuben Long, with Joseph Conway, came out to see the Missouri country -- Reuben Long sickened and died there during the summer & the others returned to Kentucky & came with several families at the close of the year to settle in the country."

Elizabeth Hopkins (GlowK@aol.com) wrote 11 Jan 2000 with some information on Lawrence Long. She is researching the family of Ware Long of Virginia, and believes there could be a connection.

On Lawrence Long, she shows information that he married Priscilla Cogswell and had these children:
1. Gabriel (d. 20 Dec 1822, md. Elizabeth Lewis 25 Jun 1807; she the dau of John Lewis & Elizabeth Harvie. This John Lewis is known as "The Lost Pioneer.")

2. Sally md. 1 Feb 1796 Richard Caulk in Harrison Co, KY. They moved to St. Louis, MO shortly thereafter. This is Elizabeth's direct line.

3. Nancy md. (Ludwell Bacon?)

Lawrence Long's will is recorded in St. Louis 1 Apr 1807 and names William, James, Nichola(s?) and Gabriel Long. Also Ludwell Bacon, son of Lawrence Long. Executors, Richard Caulk & Gabriel Long. (File #38) St. Louis County, MO Probate Records.

Elizabeth further says that "Early American Marriages before 1850 - Kentucky" has a Gabriel Long marrying Eliza Bowlin 8 Apr 1816, but she does not know who this is.

DAR records (per Elizabeth) show that Lawrence Long was a Sergeant Quartermaster in the 14th Virginia Regiment in 1777 under Col. Charles Lewis. (DAR #46035???). The DAR Patriot Index shows birth 10 May 1756 and death 1803, as well as the marriage to Patricia Cogswell.

She continues with an article from J. Thomas Scarf's "History of St. Louis," p. 1929: "Lawrence Long came to Missouri from Virginia along with Samuel Conway about 1796. He settled on a Spanish land grant of 1000 arpens (sic--'arpent'), including the site of Chesterfield. His children were Lawrence m. Sarah Post; James m. Leah Fitzwater; Alton m. Sarah Caulk (not correct, according to Elizabeth -- Alton Long was the son of Elizabeth Lewis and Gabriel Long. She does not know about the others.)" The article also says that one of the Bacon brothers -- Ludwell -- married a Long. (Lawrence names him in his will.)

Elizabeth says son William may have married Mary "Polly" Miller. An April 1811 deed document in Harrison County, Kentucky names Mary Miller and husband William Long of St. Louis, Upper Lousiana Territory, as children/heirs of Hugh Miller, Sr.

The Draper Manuscripts 24S172 further state "Joseph Conway came to Missouri in 1796 & raised a crop that year -- went back to Kentucky. In January 1797, crossed the Missouri River: The ice was running..... When the river was sufficiently frozen they crossed January 2d 1797. So Joseph Conway, who came out with the Longs and their company, always relates."

A William Long was living in Shelby County, Kentucky when he filed for Revolutionary service in 1828 (no age given). He had served in 10th Regiment, North Carolina Line.

Long marriages in Mercer County KY -- obviously all of them cannot be children of Jonathan Long, if he had 5 young children at Ruddle's Station.

Notes for MARY LONG:
Information giving the name of this child was in Grandmother's notes, and Mary is also mentioned in "History of Kentucky," by Temple Bodley, page 344., in which it is stated that she was captured by Indians in 1783. However, the name is included in a list, with no relationship noted.

Notes for WILLIAM LONG:
Information on the name of this child was received from Alice G. Shadomy. She states that William Long appears on Kentucky tax lists for 1800 in either Shelby or Lincoln County, and that he lived in St. Louis, Missouri.

There is a William Long who married Betsey Hale 2 Aug 1815 in Mercer County, KY. It is not known if there is any relation to this William Long.

A Bettsey Long (husband either William or Benjamin?) was living in Lincoln County, KY in 1820. Both lived in the county in 1800.
