4. JOHN² CONWAY, JR. (JOHN¹) was born 10 Aug 1758 in Henrico Co, VA, and died 15 Jun 1837 in Nicholas Co, KY. He married ANNA SUTTON 15 Apr 1790 in Bourbon Co, KY ², daughter of NATHANIEL SUTTON. She was born 24 Jun 1766 in Culpepper Co, VA, and died Aft. 1820.

Notes for JOHN CONWAY, JR.:
According to Evelyn Woods Barclay, John Conway served in the Revolution under Captain Harrod's Company in 1777.

His pension, W. File 8622 states that he enlisted in May 1776, at the age of 17 years (does not compute with Bible birth date). According to Revolutionary War Soldiers - Nicholas, Nelson, Muhlenberg & Morgan County Kentucky, published by the Kentucky Society of the American Revolution, John Conway received a pension under the Pension Act of 1818/1832 for service as a private in the Virginia Line. He received his pension 12 May 1834 in the amount of $80. At that time, he was age 75.

According to Henry C. Ogle's 1903 account, and also an article in the Palmyra Spectator described below, John Conway Jr. first came to Kentucky in 1777 as one of a company of soldiers to guard the settlers around Boone's Fort (Boone'sboro). This was located on the Kentucky River in the county of (Maiden?). There he remained for one year where the fort was attacked twice by Indians, and one seige lasted 8 or 10 days.

John Conway Jr. returned to Virginia in 1778, and after a short time, returned to Kentucky (probably 1779) to stay, accompanied by his father, mother, sister Elizabeth and husband William Daughterty, and one child, Joseph and Sally, also several other families. They settled about 10 miles north of Paris in the neighborhood of what was then called Riddle's Station.

John Conway settled in Bourbon County, Kentucky in 1777, and received a land certificate from the Virginia Land Commission in 1779 (presumably for Kentucky County). He is listed on 1791 and 1793 tax lists of Kentucky.

During the period of captivity in Detroit, the men prisoners were shortly allowed the liberty to work for the citizens of the town who would employ them. John Conway Jr., William Dougherty, and Joseph Conway chopped wood in winter and also killed wild hogs. One night on their return from a hunt, they came across a drunken Indian near a frozen waterway, and pitched him onto the thin ice, and left him floundering in the chilly water.

An article in the Palmyra, Missouri, "Palmyra Spectator" dated 30 Sep 1936 appears to be written from the Ogle account, but adds a few details on John Conway, Jr. It states that he was born in Henrico County in 1758 (source given is his pension record).

John Conway, VA W8622 Nicholas Co., KY. Applied 13 Feb 1834. Age 75 years.
Born Henrico Co. VA 19 Aug 1758. Enlisted Montgomery Co, VA ca April 4/5, 1776, died 15 Jun 1837. Stated 12 May 1834 that he lived in Nicholas Co. 34 years. Previously lived in Bourbon County. Lived in Kentucky ever since the war. Widow Anna Sutton applied Nicholas County 1 Dec 1843. Md. in Bourbon Co. 15 Apr 1790 by Eastin. John was taken prisoner by British and Indians 21 Jun 1780 until 1 Jun 1781 at Ruddle's Station. The pension application gives the following account (extracts):

John Conway entered the service as an enlisted man in April or May 1776 under Capt. James Newell and was marched to Cheyels (?) lead mines in Montgomery County, Virginia, to guard the mines against Tories and Indians. He served the full 6 month term and was honorably discharged. He again entered the service for an 18 month term in May 1777 under Capt. William Buchannon, Col. John Bowman, and was marched to Boonesboro, Kentucky, guarding (Boone's Fort), which was besieged 9 days and nights by British and Indians. Capt. Boone was one of the commanders. After his discharge, he remained in Kentucky, and in April 1779 went with Capt. Isaac Ruddle and settled Ruddle's station on the south fork of Licking River. He continued there acting as a guard and Indian spy until the fort was taken by Capt. Bird's troops and Indians. Survivors were marched to Detroit where they were captives four years.

When the prisoners were liberated in the Fall of 1784, he returned to Kentucky, and in the Fall of 1787, he volunteered in the company of Capt. William ___, Benjamin Logan's Campaign against the Piqua town of Indians on the head of Mad River in Ohio. This was service of about 50-60 days. He lost his discharge when he was taken prisoner by Indians. The only person who could prove his service would be his brother Jesse, who if living, resided in the State of Illinois.

Fayette County, Kentucky, County Court Order Book, p. 318 contains a deposition of John Conovery taken at Paris 6 Jun 1808 before Thomas Hughes. In the deposition, John says that he came to Kentucky in 1777 and lived at Boonesborough 1-1/2 years. In 1779, he traveled with about 25 men from Boonesborough to the Lower Blue Licks. He recalled crossing Hingston form and going into big buffalo road that led from Grant's station to the lower Blue Lick at the place known as Ready Money Jack's. Names he remembered were Col. Richard Calloway, Col. Daniel Boone, Cyrus Boone, Joseph Drake, Ephriam Drake, William Buckhammer, Flanders Calloway, Samuel Henderson, James Bell, George Linch, William Hancock, Jeremiah Price, Thomas Foote, and James Mankins. In the spring of 1779, he settled at Riddle's station and lived there until June 1780. He "followed hunting in early times." In June 1780, he and others were taken prisoner at the station.

The following are cemetery inscriptions from the Conway Graveyard near Millersburg, KY which were transcribed in 1952 and published (book unknown, page 196.) (Notes are added) when they vary from the transcription made by George Pohlman. His findings are marked *. Millersburg is in Bourbon County, very near the border of Harrison County, while the cemetery seems to be in Harrison County. The families lived in Bourbon County.

Marriage Notes for JOHN CONWAY and ANNA SUTTON:
One of the sons of John and Anna (Sutton) Conway had a son James M. Conway who remained in Pendleton County, Kentucky on the old homestead and was still living there in 1913.

Marriage record can be found in "Marriage Records 1786 -1800" Kentucky Historical Society, Vol. 22, p. 56 (Bourbon County). Bride is listed "Anne Letton (?)" and date is 14 Apr 1790.

Cemetery records show that Jack Conway was born 28 Nov 1796 and died 17 Jul instead of 16 July. Copy of original Bible records clearly show date of birth as 1794.
