Descendants of John Conway - June 24, 2003

5. ELIZABETH² CONWAY (JOHN¹) was born 16 Apr 1760 in (prob Greenbriar Co,) VA, and died 19 Oct 1847 in Pendleton Co, KY ³. She married WILLIAM M. DAUGHERTY Abt. 1778 in prob KY. He was born Abt. 1745 in Virginia, and died Bet. 1821 - 1822 in Pendleton Co, KY.

Notes for ELIZABETH CONWAY:
In 1779, accompanied by her father, mother, husband William Daughterty, and one child, brother and sister, Joseph and Sally, also several other families, Elizabeth moved from Virginia to Kentucky. The families settled about 10 miles north of Paris in the neighborhood of what was then called Riddle's Station.

Henry Ogle refers to Elizabeth's husband in a 1903 letter as "William Dougherty" and an unknown sister who married "John" brother of William Dougherty.

In 1912, he refers to Elizabeth having married Joseph Dougherty.

Notes for WILLIAM M. DAUGHERTY:
William Daugherty was captured with the rest of the family, and shared work with his brothers-in-law, John and Joseph, while in Detroit. After their return to Kentucky, William and Elizabeth Conway Daugherty remained a few years in Bourbon County, then went to Pendleton County, in the same neighborhood where Samuel Conway settled on Grassy Creek, not far from the present town of Falmouth, and remained there until William died. This captivity apparently qualified William for service in the Revolution, although there may have been other service.

Jesse Daugherty, born in Detroit, was a gallant soldier in the War or 1812. William and Elizabeth's children, according to Henry C. Ogle's account in 1903, "have in the past been people in the best standing in the community where they live, also grandchildren and great grandchildren."

William Daughter's estate was administered in Pendleton County, KY by Joseph Daugherty in 1822. His will was apparently written 17 Dec 1822, and the estate aministered 18 Nov 1822.

6. JESSE² CONWAY (JOHN¹) was born 17 Dec 1761 in Fincastle Co, VA (now Montgomery Co, VA)⁴, and died 09 Oct 1840 in Greene Co, IL. He married (1) HANNA THARP 18 May 1789 in Bourbon Co, KY, daughter of .. THARP. She was born Unknown in (or Sharp), and died Bef. 1807 in Kentucky. He married (2) ELIZABETH MCCALL 25 Dec 1807 in Barren Co, KY. She was born Unknown, and died Unknown. He married (3) MARGARET JACKSON 07 Nov 1825 in Madison Co, IL. She was born 1772, and died 1872.

Notes for JESSE CONWAY:
According to Evelyn Woods Barclay, Jesse Conway served in the Revolution, having enlisted at a young age from Reeds Island, Montgomery County, Virginia. He moved to Madison County, IL in 1817.

Henry C. Ogle, of Paris, Kentucky, wrote in his 1903 narrative that Jesse Conway was a soldier in the Revolution and fought in the battles of Eutaw Springs, the Cowpens, and other minor engagements. After the war, he left Virginia, moving to either Indiana or Illinois.

An article in the Palmyra, Missouri, "Palmyra Spectator" dated 30 Sep 1936 appears to be written from the Ogle account, but adds a few details on Jesse Conway. It states that he was born in Fincastle County, Virginia (source given is his pension record).

Another writeup on the Conway family was given to Mia K. Fleegle by Mable White (source unknown). This account appears to be an argument of the Revolutionary Patriot status of Elizabeth Bridgewater Conway, and states that Jesse Conway's service records were not found in Washington, but were substantiated by the letter of H. C. Ogle.

Abstracts Pensioners - Kentucky, Vol. 1 states Jesse Conway was in the Revolutionary War serving in the battles of Eutaw Springs, the Cowpens, and others, and was found in White County, Illinois, in 1854. Another abstract of his pension shows his enlistment in 1777 at Reed Island VA under Capt. William Buchanan, Col. Boon, Lt. Joseph Drake, and Ens. Ephriam Drake. They marched to Boonsborough in 1777 where he came under the command of Col. Boon until the fall of 1778. Shortly after the fort was overrun, he was released and returned to Reed's Island until spring, 1779, when he returned to Harrodsburg and enlisted under Capt. Isaac Riddle (Ruddle). He served there at Ruddle's Fort on the Licking River until 24 Jun 1780, when he was taken prisoner.

The "Filson Club Publications" No. 27 show that Jesse Conway was in Kentucky by 1778 at age 17, although his pension application shows he enlisted at Reed Island, Montgomery County, VA in 1777. According to this reference, Jesse Conway signed an unsuccessful petition in Nov. 1778 along with other residents of Fort Boon for the recovery of a valuable slave owned by Nathaniel Henderson which had been taken by Indians.

The same source shows Jesse Conaway as one of the signers of a 14 Oct 1779 petition asking for compensation amends (land) for hardships endured by residents of Kentucky County (including both married and single men and women taken by the Indians to Detroit).

Petition #40 from the same source dated Sep. 1787 by residents of Fayette County, asks to have a tobacco inspection station established on the north side of teh Kentucky River at the mouth of Hickman Creek. It was signed by Jesse Conway, John Conway Sr., John Conway Jr., Joseph Conway, and Samuel Conway, among others.

Petition #55 by residents of Bourbon County was to prevent the formation of Mason County (which would include only 170 people). This petition was dated 25 Oct 1788 and signed by James, Jesse and John Conway; John, David and Henry Thorp, among others.

18 May 1789, Jesse Conway married Hannah Thorp in Bourbon County ("Kentucky Pioneer Genealogy and Records" Vol. 1 no. 4, Oct. 1979, article by Michael L. Cook on Bourbon County Marriage Bonds.)

Jesse Conway bought 40 acres of land in Bourbon County, Kentucky from Craig & Johnson in 1792. The parcel was located about 7 miles northwest of Paris, Kentucky.

Jesse applied for Revolutionary pension 5 Sep 1832 from Madison County, IL, giving his age as 71. His pension was granted at $80 per year retroactive to March 1831. The pension application stated that he had enlisted in the Army of the United States in 1777 with William Buchanan and was commanded by him and Lt. Joseph Drake and Ensign Emphraim Drake at Reed Island, Virginia, in the spring of 1777. In June he marched under the command of Colonel Bowman to Boonsborough, where he was under the command of Colonel Boon, and was in the service 18 months. In the fall of 1777, the fort was besieged by Indians for 9 days and nights, and the unit retired at great loss. Soo after, he was discharged, and returned to his hom at Reed Island.

In the spring of 1779, he returned to Harrodsburgh and enlisted in Capt. Isaac Ruddle's company, Lt. Casper Casner, and an ensign whose name was not recalled, and Capt. Bowman, and was stationed at the fort on Licking River, serving until 24 Jun 1780, when the fort was taken. The whole garrison was made prisoners and the fort was burned. He states that he and other prisoners were taken to Detroit and held there until the general peace was made, when they were sent to Fort Pitt and there discharged in 1784.

On 7 Aug 1854, Margaret Conway, age 68, appeared in court as widow of Jesse Conway, and stated that he died in Greene County, IL on 9 Oct 1840. She stated that she married him as Margaret Renfro in Madison County, IL 7 Nov 1825. This statement was attested to by John Williams and Samuel Redman, and Margaret was granted a pension at the same rate of $80 per year.

Jesse Conway is buried in Edwards Cemetery on Barrow Road between Barrow and Patterson, Illinois, in Greene County. The inscription reads Jesse Conway, died 9 Oct 1838 age 77y 5m 15d. Note that the date differs by 2 years from the widow's pension application and date of birth would also differ from the Bible record, which said 17 Dec 1761. There are no probate records

A letter dated 19 Sep 1888 from Thomas J. Underwood, Dawson, Sangamon County, IL says:

"My dear sir and Cousin --

Uncle Jesse Conway often came to our house when I was a boy. We called him Uncle Jesse. He was a great hunter and fisher and used to take me with him when he went fishing. He died six or seven years after we came to this state. One of his sons came to see us a short time after the death of his father. One of his grandsons was robbed and murdered near Bement in this state 28 or 30 years ago."

(Thomas Underwood was probably a grandson of Nathan and Sarah (Conway) Underwood, and if so, Jesse Conway was his great-uncle.)

The above letter is from collected Conway papers of George Pohlman of Macon, Missouri (now deceased).

Marriage Notes for JESSE CONWAY and HANNA THARP:
Marriage record can be found in Kentucky Historical Society's publication, "Marriage Records 1786 - 1800," Vol. 22. In this publication, the bride is listed as Hannah Sharp. Other records show that her bond was signed by brother, David Thorp.

In 1788 and 1789, there is a David Thorp listed on tax lists for Bourbon County, Kentucky, and also Samuel Thorp, but no Sharps at all.

In the 1790 "census" for Kentucky, Samuel "Thirp" is listed in Bourbon County, and also in June, 1791, but there are also listed in Bourboun County in 1791 George, John, and Solomon Sharp.

Children are somewhat circumstantial, and their correct birth order is not known.

Notes for MARGARET JACKSON:
Margaret was a widow, having previously married James Renfro. She applied for a pension based on her husband's Revolutionary service in 1854.

Notes for POLLY CONWAY:
Polly Connoway married James Brunt 1 Jan 1812 in Barren Co, KY. Since there is an 1807 marriage for "Jesse Conoway" in Barren Co, KY, which seems to be the second marriage for Jesse Colnway b. 1761, it seems reasonable that this marriage should be for his daughter.

Noting that the 1810 census shows 3 daughters between age 16 and 25, and noting that the other daughters of Jesse Conway did not marry until 1818-1822 in Madison County, IL, it seems reasonable that an older daughter could have married in 1812 in Kentucky.

The Jesse Conway family lived in Christian County, KY in 1810, not far from Barren County, although not adjacent.

He has gone by 1820.

Abraham is perhaps the son of Jeremiah Claypool.
