"Forrest Grounds' Family Story" from the "Cedar Vale Messenger," Cedar Vale, Kansas, 18 Apr 1985

"Harrison and Mary Ann Grounds and five children came to Leeds by covered wagon from Albion, Ill., in 1881. They settled on a farm that was just south of Leeds. The little town of Leeds had a store, church and blacksmith shop. Nothing remains now of this little town to show it ever existed there.

"The five children to come from Illinois were Elizabeth, Ida, Joseph, Aaron, and John W. (father of Charley and Forrest). Three more children born at Leeds were Ethel, Lillie, and Ruth.

"John W. and his sisters went to Ebinezer School one mile north of Leeds, and Shilo two miles west. John W. left home as soon as he was old enough to earn wages and worked as a Cowboy for Stonebreaker and Zoy in the early 1880s until 1911. He drove a lot of cattle into Elgin, as it was the only shipping yard where they could send Oklahoma cattle to market in Kansas. Stonebreaker headquarters were just south of Blue Mound which is south of Cedar Vale six or seven miles.

"John W. was born Dec. 14, 1877 and his wife Lynnie Cable on Apr. 4, 1886 near Cedar Vale. They were married Oct. 14, 1908, and lived on a little farm south of Cedar Vale where two sons were born, Forrest on June 12, 1911, and Charley on Sept. 18, 1913.

"In the spring of 1917 the Grounds family moved to a farm two and one half miles east of the little village of Cloverdale. It had a general store, cream and egg station, church, blacksmith shop, schoolhouse, and five or six housees.

"In the wintertime literary programs were held in the schoolhouse. John W. managed a baseball team for years during the summertime. Today, all that is left of the Cloverdale village is the schoolhouse and one dwelling.

"The Grounds family lived in the hardpan school district and that is where Forrest and Charley went. Lynnie Grounds organized a club that met every two weeks and it was active for years.

"In 1939 the Cloverdale farm was sold and John purchased a farm two miles north of Cedar Vale where the family lived until the spring of 1978. John died June 9, 1943 at the age of 64. Lynnie lived on the farm until her death Sept. 29, 1959 when she was 73. Both are buried in Cedar Vale.

"Charlie Grounds farmed until he went into the Army in Jan. 1941. He served in England, Africa, Sicily and Italy, and returned home in 1945. He worked for Cable's International Harvester Co., and later Ford Co. After a serious injury to his left arm he had to quit doing mechanical work and drove a school bus. He was also a substitute mail carrier and worked in the school shop. Charley had a heart attack and died carrying the mail Feb. 13, 1982 at the age of 68. He is buried in Cedar Vale.

"Forrest Grounds farmed all his life except for the two years spent in the army. He was stationed in Alaska and returned home in 1944. He lived on the farm until the spring of 1978 when he moved to Cedar Vale. He is now retired and takes care of his place and has a few hobbies he enjoys.

"Forrest is the last of his family with the Grounds name."

95. MARTHA5 GOODNIGHT (MARY4 GROUND, RHODA CONWAY3 LONG, MARY2 CONWAY, JOHN1) was born 13 Feb 1829 in Warren Co, KY, and died 08 Jul 1907 in Warren Co, KY. She married ROBERT L. LAWRENCE 09 Feb 1847 in Warren Co, KY, son of ARCHIBALD LAWRENCE and ELIZABETH BUTLER. He was born 22 Sep 1824 in Barren Co, KY, and died 09 Mar 1907.

Notes for M
ARTHA GOODNIGHT:
Cheryl Sparks-Woolsey shows the name as Margaret instead of Martha. However, the article published at her death in New York World, which actually had more to do with Isaac than about her, gives her name as Mrs Martha Lawrence.

Notes for R
OBERT L. LAWRENCE:
The old home place of Robert and Martha Goodnight Lawrence was still standing in 1947, located near the old Isaac Goodnight farm and near the farm of Daniel Wheatley, who married Mary Lawrence, aunt of Robert Lawrence. The Wheatley Graveyard and old spring are on what was known as the Johny Lawrence farm in 1920. It was near the land originally granted to Robert Ground, and with the Goodnight farm, makes up a tract of land still owned by descendants of these first families to whom this part of Kentucky has belonged since pioneer days.

Biography of Robert Lawrence:

KENTUCKY GENEALOGY AND BIOGRAPHY, Vol. II Sketches from Warren County (reprinted from Kentucky: A History Of the State by Battle - Perrin - Kniffin, 3rd edition 1886) editor Thomas W. Westerfield, Genealogical Reference Co., Owensboro, KY, 1971, p185-186

"Robert Lawrence, one of the substantial farmers of Warren County, was born September 22, 1824, in Barren County, Ky., and is the seventh of five sons and three daughters born to Archibald and Elizabeth (Butler) Lawrence, who were born and reared in Culpeper County, Va., and came to Barren County, Ky., about 1804, and settled fourteen miles southwest of Glasgow. Archibald died about 1856, aged nearly seventy, and was a son of Richard Lawrence, of English descent, a native of Culpeper County, Va., and soldier in the Revolution. After his wife's death he came to Barren County with his family, and became a substantial farmer and slave owner. Robert Lawrence was reared on a farm. In February, 1848, he married Martha Goodnight, daughter of Isaac and Mary (Grounds) Goodnight. Mr and Mrs. Lawrence have had born to them twelve children--eleven now living: Sidney J., Henry H., James P., Mary E. (Liles), John A., Isaac E., Sarah Catherine, Jefferson D., Robert Lawrence, Luther T. and Mattie J. Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence are members, respectively, of the Baptist and Christian Churches. In 1849 they located where they now reside, on 186 acres, but now own 344 acres, all well improved. Mr. Lawrence for the last four years has also been considerable engaged in the tobacco trade. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity, and in politics is a Democrat. His first presidential vote was cast for Cass, in 1848."
