Ed Ground and M. F. Ground to Eli and Albert W. Goodwin by deed, Vol. L, p. 503. 101 acres E. C. Bradford Survey. Inst. 10 Apr 1873 for 109 acres. Filed 15 Jul 1873 for 101 acres.

Denton, Texas Newspaper: 18 Jul 1923:

Edward Ground, 1613 W. Mulberry St., pioneer citizen of Texas, died late Wednesday at his home here after a long illness. He was born in Kentucky and at the age of 7 moved to Texas with his father and settled in Dallas Co. The county at that time was infested with Indians and Ground got some training (to be used later in the Civil War) fighting the savages.

When he was 19 years old he joined Co. A, 19th Texas Cavalry and served out the war with Parsons Brigade. After the Southern demobilization he returned to Texas and married Miss Francis Lowe, who had been in the same wagon train that brought Ground to Texas.

A few years after his marriage he moved to Tarrant Co., Texas and engaged in the cattle business and lived there until he retired 12 years ago. In 1913 he came to Denton and he and his wife have since lived with their daughter, Miss Mattie Ground, a member of the Teachers College faculty.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge. His wife, one son, Henry Ground of Dallas, six daughters survive.

The body was taken to Midlothian Thursday morning and funeral services and burial were to be held at the Valley Cemetery at 3:30 Thursday afternoon.

Notes for M
ARY FRANCES LOWE:
Waxahachie Newspaper, date unknown, but abt 1929:

Mrs. Ground, early pioneers dies at 88.

Death claimed the Ellis Co. Pioneer at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Tom C. Forrest, 1016 W. Marvin Ave. Monday night. Mrs. Mary Frances Ground, 88, was born in Illinois in 1841. Her parents came to Texas when she was quite small and settled six miles North of Midlothian in Pleasant Valley, Dallas County. She spent her childhood a half mile from the Valley Cemetery, where her body will rest beside that of her husband. She was the daughter of Isaac and Mary Lowe and was the last surviving member of her family of nine children.

On March 1, 1866, she was married to Ed Ground. To this union 8 children were born, 1 son and 7 daughters.

Mrs. Ground joined the church when she was young and was active as long as her health permitted. Since her husband's death 6 years ago she had made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Forest.

Funeral services were held at the residence on W. Marvin Ave. Tuesday afternoon with the internment in the Valley Cemetery.

Notes for I
SAAC HENRY GROUND:
Isaac Ground's obituary, published in the Lancaster Herald News in Texas, says he was born 1 April 1841.

His family is found on the 1880 Census of Dallas Co, TX, Just Pct. 6, Vol. 9, ED 67, line 45, p. 10.

Isaac Ground fought for the Confederacy under General Lee in Parson's Brigade. He was a member of the Church of Christ, and lived until his death in Desota, Dallas County, Texas.

From Lancaster Herald News, Lancaster, TX:

Death of I. H. Ground

Mr. Isaac Henry Ground of DeSoto died Sunday night, September 2, 1923.

Mr. Ground was born at Bowling Green, Kentucky April 1, 1841, second child of a family of ten children. When three years old his people moved to Illinois where they remained about four years and then came to Texas. He received his education under the direction of his parents and in the schools the community afforded.

As manhood was drawing upon him, the war between the North and South began and immediately he became a soldier in the Parsons Brigade under the wonderful General Robert E. Lee. He endured many of the hardships and pleasures of the early days of dear old Texas, and without any doubt was one of her best citizens: a member of the Church of Christ, and a true christian.

He is the father of eleven children, eight living: Tomie, Julian, Bert, Wick, Dan and Tad Ground, Mrs. W. J. Cox and Mrs. J. C. Pelt; forty-nine grandchildren, five dead, and ten great-grandchildren, four dead. Of the fifty-eight that are living, all live in this community except one grandchild. He is also survived by four brothers and two sisters: Will Ground of Clarendon; Steve Ground of Baird; and Mrs. Theodore Wilder of Midlothian were with him when life departed. John Ground of Wichita Falls, Bob Ground of Washington and Mrs. Betty Walcott of Corpus Christi were unable to come.

This makes the third time in the past two years that the death angel had come into this family, first claiming J. W. Bailey, then Mrs. Ground, the wife of I. H. Ground. Uncle Ike lived to be 82 years old, 5 months and 1 day.

T. J. Ground from Jno C. English and wife (deed) 6 Jul 1886 filed 21 May 1906

Note that there is a Texas death Certificate from Collin County that shows a Thomas Jefferson Grounds born 7 Jan 1862 and died 19 Jul 1927. This death date was assigned to our Thomas Jefferson Ground at some point, and I believe that probably Wes or some other researcher found the death certificate and made the assumption that this was "our" Thomas Jefferson Ground.

However, the death certificate shows the name of father as being D. W. Grounds, the deceased is a widower who died from pernicious malaria and was a druggist by trade, born in Blue Ridge, Texas in 1862. (Our Thomas Jefferson was born in Kentucky in 1843.)
