Gordon Bevens (gbev@bright.net) writes in March 1998 that he is researching James A. McCurry, born in Tennesee about 1807-1809 and who married ? and then married Delilah Gilliam in Scott Co, VA 25 Jun 1838. They lived in Greene County, Tennessee in 1850 (census page 186). He believes James' father was John McCurry who is listed on the same page. This is a promising lead for the father and grandfather of this James McCurry.

Arleta Utterback says that James Dukes, her ggg grandfather, moved to Albany, Gentry County, Missouri just after the Civil War. Her gg grandfather James McCurry had been a tailor with the Union army and the Confederates burned their house in Rheatown, Tennessee. They later sawed lumber to rebuid, and that house was also burned. That is when they decided to join his brothers, William and Matthew, who were already in Gentry County, Missouri.

She cites her great grandmother Canaday's Bible and also the family files of Ernestine Ernst Seider as her primary sources, but does not specifically say which information comes from these sources. The Bible record is actually a typed copy given to her by Ernestine Ernst Seider.

The following McCurry burials are found at Rheatown Cemetery, Rheatown, Greene County, Tennessee, and are as yet unconnected:

McCurry, O. L. "Jack"      16 Jan 1909 - 15 Apr 1976
McCurry, Earl            1933 - 1933            son

            Griffert, Robert 10M b. TN
            Fisher, James 7M b. TN

*note that I do not believe this is a son of Robert's. It could be a child of James, who is no longer living at home and would be age 23 at this time. It could also be a female, daughter of Robert's brother, William, who lives in HH 75. William is supposed to have had a daughter Emily who does not appear on the 1870 census. His Emily COULD have been age 7, but is more likely to have been born about 1865.

Around 1880, commerce in Rheatown is described in James C. Donnelly's History of Rheatown, Greene Co., Tennessee:

Some manufacturing was done at Rheatown. Wilson Wagons were famous in those days and were made by Joseph B. Wilson. A chaff piler threshing machine made by William McKeehan also a large fan for threshing machines by Tom Doyle. Furniture and cabinets were made by Joe Collins. Coffins by Tom Collette. There was another wagon maker also, his name was Ed Dukes. A tin shop that made bread pans, coffee pots, water buckets and other wares was operated by Patty Farris. Blacksmiths were Bob Dukes, Henry Fisher and the Scott brothers. Hand operated corn shredders by James G. Fisher. He was also a minister. Woven carpets by Elizabeth Fisher wife of Rev. James. Hatmaker was Ezra Pierce. He also carded and dyed the wool used in the making of hats. A cannery which was the largest employer in Rheatown. Beans and tomatoes were the most crops canned, others being sweet potatoes, corn and fruits.

The Churches of Rheatown (included) the Methodist Episcopal Church built in 1871 which had a beautiful oak pump organ. The Organists were Mary Donnelly, Chloe Fisher, Emma Dukes and Opal Bright. The Church's bell could be heard for miles on a clear day.

In February 2001, Sherry Britton emailed me (sbritton@sxtn.net). Sherry lives in Green County, Tennessee and is researching the James/Jane Gass Britton families. She worte a book on William Britton Sr., brother of James Britton.

She gives the following information, which adds to what I already have:

Robert b. 1826, d. 2 Oct 1884, Green County TN
      md. 8 Jan 1846 to
Ruth A. Marshall
      Children:
      James L. b. 1847
      William b. 1849
      Robert C. b. 1860
      Mary Emily b. 1863

In the 1860 US Census - Greene County, TN:
Dukes, Robt. age 34
      Ruth age 32
      James L. age 13
      Wm. A.      age 11
Griffy, Robert C. 5/12

1870 US Census - Greene County, TN:
Dukes, Robert
      Ruth
      William age 21
      Emily age 7

1880 US Census - Greene County, TN
Dukes, Robert
      Ruth
      Robert C. 20
      Mary E. 17

Sherry asks if Robert C. Griffy in the 1860 US Census is the same as Robert C. age 20 in 1880. I do not know, as I did not have this census information, but it looks suspiciously like Robert C. Griffy was adopted by the family.
