According to F. B. Mercer, "Campbell was restless when he came to North Powder and wanted to move on. He was in California working in a mill. One evening he was gambling and came out a big winner. On the way home after the game he was attacked, killed with a knife and robbed. It was a few weeks before his parents were notified. He is buried in North Powder."

SAMUEL A. McCOY DEAD

Born and Reared in Independence; He Left Here 15 Years Ago

Samuel Alexander McCoy, for many years a resident of Independence, died last night in Spokane, Wash. where he went a number of years ago and engaged in the mining business. Mr. McCoy was the son of W. L. McCoy and a grandson of Judge Samuel Sawyer, prominent banker of Independence years ago. He was born in Independence in 1873 and was educated at Dartmouth University. He married Miss Lola Symington, daughter of a prominent Independence family. He left here fifteen years ago. Besides an only sister, Mrs. Andrew C. Knox, 3715 Walnut Street, Kansas City, he is survived by four children: Miss Frances McCoy of Spokane, Mrs. Robert Hurd of Seattle, Wash., Robert and William McCoy of Spokane. Funeral arrangements are not complete but it is believed that they will be conducted there since all the children live near. (Iva Riggs)
