Notes for CECIL DUKES:
Cecil arrived with his parents in Oklahoma on his sixth birthday. They brought along at least one black servant who helped Mrs. Dukes.

Cecil served in World War I, and later suffered cirrosis of the liver due to alcohol comsumption. He had a large portion of his liver removed at the VA hospital in Oklahoma City. After this, he did not drink again and died of natural causes and heart failure.

Gracie Belle was an insulin dependent diabetic, adult onset. She suffered breast cancer and had her left breast removed at the age of 88. She ided of natural causes and heart failure.

Came from humble beginnings in Laddonia, Missouri, a farmer's son.

A hard-working student, saved money by teaching in rural schools to enter the University of Missouri at age 25. He completed his A.B. and M.A. in education and then married Bennetta Barkley of Mexico, Missouri, a talented musician and a Phi Beta Kappa.

Was superintendent of schools for 9 years.

Hired in 1918 as a professor of history for Christian College in Columbia, Missouri, and went on to become vice-president the next year.

After 2 years, was promoted to President. He remained in this post until at least 1932.

Over six feet tall, dark-eyed, handsome, with a boyish smile and warm handclasp. Had a hearty, slightly twangy voice and booming laugh that went with his stature.
