In June 1998, Donald Thomas reports that he has visited Abingdon and spoken to the caretaker of Abingdon City Cemetery. Notes for W
ILLIAM BUTLER GROUND:
William Butler Ground writes 26 Dec 1853 to his uncle in Illinois. He and his family have recently arrived in Oregon. He reports enjoying the best health in his life, and it is healthy country (although 4 children died in the vicinity of the "hooping cough" and two from the "flux" brought by emigrants.

He said that the day before Christmas had been the coldest day so far, but "would not be counted a cold day in Illinois." The grass, he says is green all the time, and the stock are out eating their fill.

(In January, however, the picture changed...Edward Ground wrote to Illinois that the snow fell and covered up the grass that the stock could not eat and everything was so high they could not afford to buy necessary supplies.)

His father got a claim within a mile of Uncle Ira's and a quarter of Uncle Lides.

He gives prices: Mares $1.50 to $2.00; cows .65 to $1; pork $20 per hundred; wheat $2 a bushel; chicken 75 cents each; eggs 50 cents a dozen; butter 50 cents a pound, potatoes 50 cents a bushel. Potatoes had gone down from $1 a bushel.

His mother encloses "the leaf of a fir tree."

William Butler Ground found employment for a time with a survey crew and traveled extensively in Oregon on horseback. He met and married Sarah Jane Jones, daughter of Elijah and Susan Pope Jones, April 3, 1864 in Monmouth, Oregon.

In 1876, William Butler Ground and Sarah Jane followed her parents to Asotin, Washington. Their son, Edward J. Ground, was born on the steamboat "The Occident" on either the Willamett or Columbia rivers ont he way to Asotin County, Washington. William settled in the Cloverland country which is not too far from Anatone. The 1880 census states that William is sick with pleurisy, and his brother, Robert Ground, is also listed. Robert never married, and was known as a kindly soul, so he had come to help his brother and his family in their time of need. William B. Ground died some time after June in 1880, and is buried in the Lake Cemetery near the Cloverland Road. He left his wife, age 31 years, with seven children age 13 and under, and another child expected in September.

(Note that the first two children listed have resulted in some confusion. Both are said to have nicknames "Lizzie" and each is recorded as marrying (in two different sources) the same man, Robert G. Fanning. Because birth dates are specific, it was thought that these were indeed two different daughters. But lacking evidence that both married the same man, the husband in question is recorded here with the original wife, Elizabeth Frances.
