      Barbara Jean Hathcock

Pleasant H. Beckham became a teacher at age 18 and went to Texas in 1860, where he taught until 1868.

Barbara Jean Hathcock's notes include a deed in Tarrant County, Texas dated 1 May 1867, but does not give the Deed Book or page number it where it was found. It was an admnistrator's report of sale of 172-1/2 acres, a part of the Henry Russell headright, pursuant to an order of the court at the February term to P. H. Beckham (also called Becham). The land was located about 12 miles south from Fort Worth.

In 1868, he returned to Warren County, KY and engaged in teaching and farming. In 1884, he engaged inthe goods business at Doughty's Creek, better known as Totty's old stand.

Barbara Jean Hathcock shows that Pleasant Henderson Beckham was born 1 mile north of the Barren River at Easter, Kentucky.

A biography of Pleasant H. Beckham which appeared in "History of Warren County, Kentucky" was cited in Barbara Jean's notes. She did not give publishing information, but the article, summarized, said Pleasant was raised a farmer and married 10 Sep 1858 to Perlina J. In Barbara Jean's notes is an article from "The History of Greenwood County, Kansas." While there is no publishing information given, the article ends with "Submitted by Granddaughters Erma Gould and Mary Hoobler." The article, summarized, says:

William and Mary Phebe Vaught left Barren County, Kentucky in a covered wagon in the Fall of 1872. Their son Emmet was 6 weeks old. They arrived in Humboldt, Kansas with a sick child and 35 cents in cash. They spent their money for medicine and pressed on to Piedmont, where they had Pedigo and Beckham relatives.

The couple had been members of Disciples of Christ church and joined the Piedmont Christian church when it organized in the late 1800s. They homesteaded about 1-1/2 miles south of Piedmont on what became known as Guffy Farm. Seven more children were born here.

William Vaughn died of a ruptured appendix, and two of the children, John and Glenn, died of measles and croup. Mary Phebe decided to make a go of the farm. She experienced many hardships, including poor crops, one barn destroyed by fire and another by tornado. Son Emmet took up carpentry to supplement their income and built many houses in the Piedmont area.

In 1906, Mary Phebe sold the farm and moved to Piedmont and built a house two blocks east of the Methodist Church.

Son Guy went to Wichita Barber School and returned to Piedmont to practice his trade there. Later he purchased the shop from Roy Simpson and operated it for over 50 years.

In Barbara Jean's outline, this family has a different entry appearance than the rest, and contain identification numbers. It appears that at least this family comes from one source that is different, but she does not give the source, other than to cite James Heidelbaugh:

"According to James, Nataniel Beckham came to Kansas from Kentucky about the same time his mother Margaret (Ground) Beckham came from Texas. He made the run when the Cherokee Strip was opened and was fortunate in establishing his claim to 160 acres of good farm land four miles north of the present town of Lamont, Oklahoma."

On the 1880 US Census, Nathaniel is living in District 8, Glasgow Junction, Barren County, Kentucky.

In 1900, he is living in Lamont Township, Grant County, Oklahoma. By 1910, he is living in Major County, Oklahoma and also in 1920. Barbara Jean does not give the details of the census.
