Robert Letcher Ground at age 16 was orphaned. After the death of his mother in 1881, he went to live with his brother, Edward Ground. Family tradition tells us that as a young man he worked for a cattleman who asked him to rustle some cattle and when he refused, the cattleman found someone else to do it and Robert received the blame. Being a young person and afraid, he ran west and was not heard from for a time. But he did write a letter to his brother John and another brother was with John when the letter was read, which was very sad. Some time later, perhaps years, the real culprit was convicted, but perhaps Robert never knew. He drifted to Kansas where he met and married Versalue Wattenburg in 1902 when he was 37 years old and she was 26 years of age. They married in Oswego, LaBette County, Kansas.

The family went to Riverside, Okanogan County, Washington, where he farmed and in 1922 retired and moved to Omak where he died in 1952. Funeral services were held at the Central Methodist Church in Omak by Rev. R. J. Gerla, and graveside services were conducted by the Okanoma IOOF lodge and Precht Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. Versalue Ground continued to live at 518 S. Ash St., Omak, Washington, and died in 1973 at the age or 96 in the Tillikum House at Okanoga, Washington, Burial was in the Riverside Cemetery at Riverside, Washington.

Versalue Ground continued to live at 518 South Ash Street, Omak, Washington, and died 11 March 1973 at the age of 96, in the Tillikum House in Okanogan, Okanoga, County, Washington. She also is buried at the Riverside Cemetery.
