Descendants of Thomas BOYLSTON, Jr.

60. RHODA7 BOYDSTON (JAMES6 BOYDSTUN, JR., JAMES5, DAVID4 BOYDSTON, WILLIAM3 BOYLSTON, THOMAS2, THOMAS1) was born 25 Jan 1786 in Union Twp, Washington Co, TN, and died 1860 in Marble, Madison Co, AR. She married JOHN WILLIAM GAGE 04 Sep 1806 in Bowling Green, Union Twp, Warren Co, KY; A/89; md by J.H. Owens, son of ROBERT GAGE and LUCRETIA SHIPMAN. He was born 02 Mar 1782 in Rutherford Co, NC, and died Abt. 1855 in King's River Twp, Madison Co, AR.

Notes for J
OHN WILLIAM GAGE:
The Gages are said to originate in Orange County, New York, and moved to North Carolina about 1770, first to Rowan County and then to Rutherford County a few years later.

Edwin Leigh Tucker's lineage gives the husband of Rhoda Boydstun as John Andrew Gage. This information, according to Shirley Nobles Erickson (shirley@htcomp.net), is taken from Shirley's mother's research. Chuck Boydstun's lineage gives the husband as John William Gage, as does the lineage of Edward Hudson. Mrs. Domonoske, in her book, on page 161, gives the verbage of Warren County Marriage Book A, p. 89. 4 Sep 1806, marriage of William Gage to Rhoda Bordston, by J. H. Owens. Mother, Sarah, gives consent 1 Sep 1806. James Boydston and William Gage give bond and sign for upcoming wedding between William Gage and Rhoda Boydston.

I entered the name "John William Gage," taking the marriage information into heavy account, and assuming that this man went by his middle name.

John William Gage is said to have moved from North Carolina with other family members to Warren County, Kentucky about 1785 to the Sinking Creek area, where he married Rhoda Boydston 4 Sep 1806 with John Howard Owens officiating (Marriage Register, p. 89, Warren County, KY).

They moved to upper Tennessee soon after their marriage, where their first child was born in 1807, and in the 1820s were living in Hardeman County, Tennessee.

The 1820 Census of Hickman County, Tennessee, lists William Gage and family. This was apparently after they lived in Hardeman County, if the account given above is correct.

The 1830 Census of Madison County, Arkansas shows John William Gage family.

Rhoda B. Gage is a widow in Madison County, Arkansas, age 50-60 in 1840.

Samantha Boydstun in her FTM website lists two additional children of Wiliam and Rhoda Gage which fall into line: James b. ca 1817; Warren b. ca 1819. She omits a few of the later children in her listing. She gives the father's name as John William Gage, which I believe to be correct, and has all children born in Hardeman County, Tennessee. If Pheba was born in Overton County, then this seems somewhat unlikely.

Chuck Boydstun lists only the child, John Andrew.

Further information is sent by Edward K. Hudson of Springdale, Arkansas in March 1998.

In entering Edward Hudson's data, which was remarkably complete and typographically accurate, I encountered a problem.

Ed lists the following children for Rhoda Boydstun Gage:
1. John Andrew b. 1807 md. Lydia Clements; md. Martha Allen Barton
2. James Elbert b. 1809 md. Lucretia Wood
3. George Washington b. 1810 md. Ellen Catherine Johnson
4. William Britton b. 1812 md. Nancy H. Hudspeth
5. Sarah Ann b. 1813 md. Lewis Calvin Hudspeth
6. Jeremiah Monroe b. 1815 md. Nancy A. --; md. Mary Chaney
7. James b. abt 817
8. Phebe Ines b. 1821 md. John David Combs
9. Jonathan b. 1823 md. Emily Ellen Clements
10. Robert b. abt 1824
11. Amos Warren b. 1827 md. CATHERINE WOOD
12. Lucinda b. 1829

This meshes well with what I have from other sources, except that I had the following additonal children:
1. Mathew b. 1808 md. CATHERINE WOOD
2. Warren b. abt 1819

The Catherine Wood indicated in both lists, married to two different brothers, is the same person; her parents were listed identically.

The children for each of the marriages are different, yet the dates overlap, making sequential marriages to the two brothers impossible.

Since Edward Hudson's lineage seems so very reliable, I have included the two extra siblings, but have assigned Catherine to Amos Warren Gage, as did Edward in his data. For Mathew, I have simply "married him off" to an Unknown Daughter Wood, until further information is available.

Lee P. Holt of Huntsville, Arkansas, writes 7 Dec 1998. (Idholt@madisoncounty.net). Lee is a descendant of James Boydstun Jr. through his daughter Rhoda who married William Gage. He does not at this time offer additional information.

61. ROBERT WASHINGTON7 BOYDSTUN (JAMES6, JAMES5, DAVID4 BOYDSTON, WILLIAM3 BOYLSTON, THOMAS2, THOMAS1) was born Abt. 1788 in Washington Co, TN, and died 08 Jul 1841 in White Co, AR. He married RACHEL GRIFFITH 1810 in Hickman Co, TN, daughter of CHISHOLM GRIFFITH and POLLY BRIGGS. She was born Abt. 1789 in Tennessee, and died 08 Jan 1848 in White Co, AR.

Notes for R
OBERT WASHINGTON BOYDSTUN:
The Boydstuns were married in Tennessee and then are said to have moved to Rutherford Co, NC. By 1850, they were in Arkansas. (Note that Shirley Nobles Erickson (shirley@htcomp.net) shows that Robert and Rachel were both born in Rutherford County, North Carolina. She also shows Robert dying in Johnson County, not White County, Arkansas.)

These nearly adult children of Robert Boydstun are found on the 1850 US Census:

Red River Township, White County, AR
Boydstun, S. 19M farmer b. MO
      Jacob 18M b. MO
      Sarah 17F b. MO
      Joseph 15M b. MO

Nearby, a Huggins family, children all born in Arkansas, but father, A. b. NC ca 1808; mother Jane b. AL age 26. Children range from 4/12 to 15.

An unnamed male Boydstun age 26M farmer b. TN
      wife Jane, 24 F b. AR
      Mary, 6/12F b. AR

Also J. Robbertson, 22M farmer B. TN

I see no son of this family who married a Jane (probably Jane Huggins).

Children of R
OBERT BOYDSTUN and RACHEL GRIFFITH are:

150. ii.   DAVID CARROLL BOYDSTUN, b. 16 Feb 1813, Hickman Co, TN; d. 30 Sep 1899, Kingston, Madison Co, AR.

  vii.   ROBERT WASHINGTON BOYDSTUN, JR., b. 12 Jan 1825, Hardeman Co, TN; d. 20 Nov 1887; m. RACHEL JETT, 1845, Arkansas; b. 03 Dec 1826, Alabama; d. 18 Jun 1901, Arkansas.
Notes for ROBERT WASHINGTON BOYDSTUN, JR.:
Robert Washington Boydstun is described as a Baptist minister; portly build, raven black hair.

Because of information received from Chuck Boydstun (cbab@jps.net), who cited census and other information as proof, the following children, originally connected to this Robert Washington Boydstun and Rachel Jett, were moved to their correct parents, Robert Boydstun and Rachel Avery:

Francis Marion b. 1846
Mary b. 1850
L.E. Boystun b. 1858 d. bef 1870
Robert Henry Boydstun b. 1862
William Depriest Boydstun b. 1866
Cynthia Ann Boydstun (Synthia Ann) b. 1868
William Randolph Boydstun b. 1870
Sarah T. Boydstun b. 1872

These children came to be attached to this Robert and Rachel (Jett) Boydstun because Gladys Domonoske surmised that they were children of this couple. However, later information, including cemetery, census, death certificates, etc. indicate that most, if not all of them, belong to Robert Boydstun and Rachel Avery. Until further information is obtained, all the children have been moved to their more logical parents. Shirley Ericson is another researcher who assigns the children to Robert Washington Jr. and Rachel Jett.

  Notes for RACHEL JETT:
There is some question as to which Robert Boydstun Rachel Jett was married. She may have been the wife of Robert Boydstun b. 1826 TN, son of William Alvis Boydstun Sr. and Martha Depriest. However, family tradition, told by Cleburne G. Pound, great grandson of Martha and Richard Kenner Pound, gives strong indication that Robert Boydstun who married Rachel Jett is indeed the son of Robert Washington Boydstun. Therefore, I place the marriage with Robert Washington Boydstun and his family.

Later information gives an even stronger indication that Rachel Jett married the other Robert Boydstun and that the children have been combined to one marriage. Upon further documentation, which I will request from Chuck Boydstun, these families will be entered correctly. (June 18, 1998)

155. viii.   WILLIAM DELAFAYETTE BOYDSTUN, b. 09 Jan 1827, Hardeman Co, TN; d. Unknown.
  ix.   ELIZABETH BOYDSTUN, b. 16 Dec 1829, Hardeman Co, TN; d. 28 Nov 1848; m. .. BAYLIS, Unknown; b. Unknown.
  x.   JOHN STEPHEN BOYDSTUN, b. 10 Apr 1830, Washington Co, MO; d. 31 Dec 1851; m. MILLIE GRAHAM, 02 Sep 1851, Washington Co, MO; b. Bet. 1825 - 1835; d. Unknown.
  Notes for JOHN STEPHEN BOYDSTUN:
John Stephen Boydstun is found as head of household in 1850 in White County, Arkansas with younger children.
