  Notes for MAHULDA ELIZABETH LEIRD:
Information on this daughter, who is described as "Mauhuldo (maybe Martha) Elizabeth (Betty) Leird who married Jonas Bates" comes from Judy Davis McCormick (jmccorm1@tampabay.rr.com) July 31, 1999.

She adds that Nancy Jane Condray is her 2nd great grandmother and also married a second time to Jeremiah (Jerry) Bates, which is her line.

In December, 1999, A'Delle Laws writes (adelle@ulink.net). She has the Bible of "Betty" Leird Bates' daughter, Nora, which shows her name as Martha Elizabeth Leird. She also gives the names and dates for all the children.

She says that after Martha died in childbirth in Oklahoma, the children were brought back to Arkansas by Jonas Bates, and "farmed out." Nora, her grandmother, was supposedly raised by Leirds, although she is not certain which relations raised her.

A'Delle and Judy believe that Frank lived for a time with Nancy Jane Condray Leird and her second husband, Jerry Bates.

A'Delle wrote again in March 2001 with a new email address (Dugganlaws@aol.com) and a correction taht Nora Bates Terrell, her grandmother, was raised by the Charley Thompson family in Cleburne County, and her great aunt, Lela, was said to have been raised by the Leirds.

ENJAMIN FRANKLIN BOYDSTUN CONDRAY:
Benjamin F. B. Condray served in the 13th Tennesse Cavalry, U.S. Army, during the Civil War. His pension application in 1910 states that he served as a scout for recruiting officer Jake Haze in Lauderdale and surrounding counties of Tennessee from 15 Jul 1863 until his enrollment at Union City, Tennessee as a soldier of Company E of the same battalion on 4 February 1864. He was discharged as a private 12 April 1864 when his unit was disbanded. Since his actual military service was less than 90 days, the pension was denied. The period he served as a scout was apparently in civilian status.

Death date from Mark Backus, great-great grandson of Benjamin F. B. Condray. Previously had 18 Jan 1922 as death date and birth date of 14 Oct 1845.

She lists as source of her material Faulkner County Its Land and People, Faulkner County Historical Society, 1986, River Road Press, Conway, AR. Other information comes from Linda's mother's research and records. She also cites information from Mary Ellen Burton and Margaret Dunaway.

Benjamin Boydston Condray and Martha Jane Bates Condray moved to Faulkner County (Arkansas), near New Home community, from Lauderdale County, Tennessee, in 1873. They brought with them seven of their twelve children... Born at the home place in the New Home community were (the last five children).

All twelve children lived to be married and have children of their own.

Martha Jane Condray died at their farm home in December 1911. After is wife's death, Benjamin moved to a new home just north of Hendrix College (in Conway). He had purchased this new home only a few days prior to his wife's death.

*Local and Personal*

Mr. J. K. P. BOYDSTUN died Saturday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Hart STEWART, in Blytheville, Ark., and his remains were carried to Memphis Saturday for interment. He will be remembered by the older citizens of Ripley and Lauderdale County, where he resided until about 35 years ago when he moved from here to Ark., thence to Memphis. Since the death of his wife in Memphis about two years ago, he had been living with his children at different places. He was 80 years of age and was held in high esteem by all who knew him.

Children of J
AMES BOYDSTUN and SARAH MCCLELLAND are:
  i.   CHARLES MORTIMER9 BOYDSTUN, b. 20 Oct 1867, Ripley, Lauderdale Co, TN; d. 1961, Age 94; m. ELIZABETH EUGENIA SEBASTIAN, Abt. 1895, (other children); b. Bet. 1865 - 1875, (married at about age 32); d. Bef. 1961, (age 72 when she died).
  Notes for CHARLES MORTIMER BOYDSTUN:
C. M. married Elizabeth when she was 32 years old. He had been married before.

He served in some capacity during the Spanish American War.

In a 1998 interview with Charles R. Boydstun Sr., Charlie Boydstun asks details about C. M. Boydstun. Included here are some of the more interesting points. The complete transcript is located on Chuck's website.

Charles Mortimer Boydstun went to work at about 18 years old in a logging camp near Truman, Arkansas. He had to walk four or five miles through the woods to Truman from camp each night. He carried a Colt revolver with him for safety, and once frightened away a panther by firing the gun.

He later bought a farm near Black Oak, Arkansas, and went into the cooperage business, eventually owning at least three mills. Cooperage involves making the staves for barrels. He made utility and meat barrels, but not for whiskey, since he did not have the right kind of white oak needed to make whiskey Barrels. He was wiped out in the great flood of 1927. He rebuilt, but the Depression followed, and he lost his money in a failed plant.

According to his grandson, C. M. enjoyed his whiskey, and every six or eight months would go on a two-week bender, traveling and seeing the country in the process. He always returned home broke. When he was 88, he decided he had never seen the Grand Canyon, and would just go by train. His grandson termed him, "a hell of a man" who was always helping people.

C. M. Boydstun sold his house furniture and all, as none in the family wanted it.

  Notes for ELIZABETH EUGENIA SEBASTIAN:
Elizabeth Sebastian was a talented painter, and also taught elocution at Sloan-Hendricks school in Imboden, Arkansas.

Elizabeth had one brother named Will Sebastian who never married. He died in their Neddleton house. She also had three sisters who never married. She herself married when she was about 32 years old.

  ii.   DAUGHTER BOYDSTUN, b. Bet. 1870 - 1880; d. Aft. 1925, Living in Blytheville, AR 1925; m. HART STUART, Unknown; b. Bet. 1870 - 1880; d. Unknown.
  iii.   TOM BOYDSTUN, b. Bet. 1870 - 1880.
  Notes for TOM BOYDSTUN:
Tom and Carroll were estranged for about 40 years, but reunited before they died. Apparently there was some resentment that Tom did not carry his share of the load when the parents became eldery.

  iv.   IRENE BOYDSTUN.
  Notes for IRENE BOYDSTUN:
Irene did marry, and had two sons, apparently, but her nieces, interviewed by Charlie Boydstun, could not remember her last name. One son did not marry, but the other did, and had a daugther. The nieces finally, after much consideration, decided she married an artist from Hungary.
