He married MARY JANE DAWDY 19 Dec 1850 in Knox Co, IL, daughter of JOHN DAWDY and SARAH BOYDSTUN. She was born 22 Nov 1831 in Eureka, Woodford Co, IL, and died 25 Jan 1915 in Indian Point, Knox Co, IL.

HOWELL TERRENCE⁸ BOYDSTUN (BARTLETT⁷, BENJAMIN G.⁶, JAMES⁵, DAVID⁴ BOYDSTON, WILLIAM³ BOYLSTON, THOMAS², THOMAS¹) was born 14 Jun 1834 in Indian Point, Knox Co, IL, and died 21 Dec 1904 in Roseberry, Valley Co, ID. He married (1) HARRIETT WAMPLER Abt. 1860 in Tarrant Co, TX, daughter of THOMAS WAMPLER and NANCY RAY. She was born 05 Jul 1840 in "Hattie" (Texas), and died 05 May 1868 in Newton Co, MO. He married (2) SARAH JANE COX STENNETT 13 Oct 1869 in Newton Co, MO; 2nd mg. for both; other children, daughter of WILLIAM STENNETT and MARY COX. She was born 29 Nov 1835 in Shiller, Illinois, and died 22 Jun 1901 in Roseberry, Valley Co, ID.

Howell T. Boydston was in Valley County records from 1892 to 1904.

In 1893, he is listed as a member or applicant of the National Farmers Alliance & Industrial Union at Roseberry.

In 1904, he filed land claim 1994.

In 1904, his death is registered at Holmes Cemetery in the Donnelly area.

In 1905, there are records indexed to H.F. Boydstun, deceased.

A typed copy of Howell T. Boydstun's obituary was sent by Lana Anderson. In part, it says:

H. T. Boydstun, merchant and postmaster of this place, died Dec. 21st after an illness of a week's duration. The funeral was held in the M.E. church by Rev. Long.

Born in Knox County, Illinois June 14, 1834, died at Roseberry, Idaho Dec. 21, 1904. Deceased had a cold which developed into pneumonia. His son, W. B. and daughter, Amy, were with him.

H.T. lived in his birthplace until he left for Texas as a man. He was employed by the Federal Government as a conductor of Teamsters during the Civil War. After the war, he was a scout against the Indians in Texas. From Texas, he moved to Missouri, where he contracted and built the first houses in Joplin, Mo. From there, he moved to Illinois, where he lived a year or two at Galesburg. He then went to Crawford County, KS, and farmed about 12 years. In 1891, he came to Idaho, arriving in February and remaining until August when he moved to Long Valley, near Roseberry.

He began a mercantile business at Roseberry in 1893 with J. W. Pottenger. Since 1894, he has run the only store in town, and was postmaster 11 years before his death.

His wife died 22 Jun 1901, and since then, his daughter, Mrs. William Barker, has kept house for him.

He was maried twice, the first time in Texas to Harriet Wampler, from which two daughters survive: Mary, married to E. L. Goul, living at Mesquite, Oregon, and Mattie, married to Thomas J. Knox, living near Weir City, Kansas.

He married 13 Oct 1869 to his second wife, Sarah J. Culpepper, in Newton County, MO. Two children resulted, a son, W. B. of Lardo, born 12 Aug 1870 and a daughter Amy married to William Barker and living in Roseberry.

The obituary appeared in the Long Valley Advocate, Lardo, Boise Co, ID, Thursday, December 29, 1904.

Lana Anderson (lana@chatlink.com) says that Howell signed on Stennett probate papers, a further clue that his two wives were originally Stennett sisters. George Knox disputes the Stennett connection.

David Smith adds a third child to the second marriage -- Ephram Boydstun. No dates or particulars were given. He also lists the three children from the first marriage as Boydstun children.

Notes for HARRIETT WAMPLER:
Lana Anderson (lana@chatlink.com) writes 21 Jun 2000 that she has been in contact with a descendant of Mattie Boydstun Knox, who says that Harriet "Hattie" was a Wampler. We are awaiting more information at this time.

In June 2000, Lana writes with additional information. She found Wamplers in Parker County, Texas and also on the 1850 US Census in Dallas County, Texas. They were also living in Newton County, Missouri, along with the Stinnets. Harriet has a middle initial "S" so Lana and a Stinnet researcher believed she might be a Stinnet.

She sends along an unsigned email (email address gives name of George Knox) that says writer is grandchild of Mattie Boydston, born 6 May 1866 in Texas. The writer has a copy of her death certificate. She was daughter of Howell Terry Boydston of Illinois and Hattie Wampler of Texas. She married Jefferson Knox of Missouri. They had five children. He was killed in a coal mining accident in Walsenburg, Colorado 12 Dec 1911. She second married Homer Barnett and lived in Seaside, Oregon until her death 12 Jul 1912. The writer sends an outline of the descendants of Thomas Jefferson Wampler.

In July 2000 I heard directly from the above George Knox, who lives in Canon City, Colorado.

Notes for SARAH JANE COX STENNETT:
First information was that Sarah Jane's maiden name may be Cox, but in June 2000, Lana Anderson writes that she and another researcher have found a marriage for Sarah Jane Stennett to Ephraim Culpepper in Illinois that she believes is this Sarah Jane.

She further says that She now believes that Howell's first wife Harriett was also a Stennett, a sister of Sarah Jane's. Sarah (and thus Harriett)'s mother was a Cox, and she believes Sarah Jane was named "Sarah Jane Cox Stennett."

Sarah J. Boydston is enumerated with Howell P. Boydston on the 1900 Census of Omega Township, Roseberry, Valley Co, ID, page 208A.

David Smith lists Sarah's maiden name as "Culpepper," a reference of course, to her previous marriage. He shows her death as 20 Jun 1901.

Notes for MARY FRANCES BOYDSTUN:
Mary Frances Boydstun Goul is listed in records of Valley Co, ID 1905 at her father's death. She resided at Mesquite, OR in 1904.

George Knox says that "Hattie and Willie Knox" (children of Mattie?) were sent to be raised by Mary and Everman Goul when Mattie Boydstun Knox died. Mary signed the death certificate for Mattie.

Notes for MARTHA BOYDSTUN:
Mattie Boydstun Knox lived near Weir City, Kansas, in 1904, but apparently moved to Oregon, where she died.

George A. Knox sent a copy of Mattie's death certificate which shows she died of Bright's disease of the kidneys, causing heart weakness and dropsy. She suffered from the condition, or was treated for it, for a period of 4 months.

The certificate shows that she was born 6 May 1866 in Texas to Howel Terry Boydston born in Illinios and Hattie Wampler, born in Texas. Informant is Mrs. Mary Goul of Seaside, Oregon (Mattie's sister).

Notes for THOMAS JEFFERSON KNOX:
It is thought that Thomas Knox lived in Malhour County, Oregon about 1904-1905 and may have been using the name of John or Jefferson Knox.

He worked as a coal miner. George A. Knox sent a copy of his obituary and death certificate. The latter was from the State of Colorado, file #13, No. 681, and names the deceased as Jefferson Knox. It says cause of death was a fall of rock in Walsen mines. It gives his parents names as George Knox born in Ohio, and Evaline Heyburn born in Ohio. Informant is Thomas R. Knox of Walsen, Colorado.

George A. Knox lists this child as Jefferson Knox, and provides the dates of birth and death.

Notes for HOMER C. BARNETT:
Homer C. Barnett wrote to one of Mattie's children on 31 Jul 1913 telling the events of Mattie's death. He says that she died at 11 o'clock p.m. and was buried 14 July, the funeral being preached by Reve. Oliver of the Methodist Church. She apparently received a funeral rite from Seaside Hive of the Ladies of the Maccabees of the World.

He relates that she carried an insurance policy of $1,000 which was for the benefit of Hattie and Willie's education. Everman Goul, he said, was legal guardian of the children.

He had asked Mary (Goul) to write to the son and also to Blanche, and says she wrote to George. That eliminates all the children but Levi, so it is to Levi that the letter is written.

Ozius & Etta Barker Matthews do not appear. This is assumed to be a child of Charles, the assumed brother of William T. Barker. No attempt has been made to construct this family without further proof that it is related.

Charles & Ora Barker Wovley do not appear. This is assumed to be a daughter of William T. & Amy Boydstun Barker

It is speculative that Charles (age 48) and William T. (age 49 could be brothers. The rest of the individuals are the family of William T. and Amy Boydstun Barker.

A marriage is assumed, but not known between Tilda and either Elvie C. or William T. Barker, Jr.. No death information on Tilda was in the "Early Pioneers...Valley Co, ID" manuscript, only the cemetery information. As no child was on the 1920 census for William T. & Amy Barker (Elvie's parents), it is assumed that this is a wife of one of the sons. She may have died elsewhere and been returned to be buried with her husband.

No marriage information was noted in the above source for either Elvie or William T. Jr.
