Descendants of Thomas BOYLSTON, Jr.

218. NANCY H. M.8 BOYDSTUN (WILLIAM7, BENJAMIN G.6, JAMES5, DAVID4 BOYDSTON, WILLIAM3 BOYLSTON, THOMAS2, THOMAS1) was born 12 Apr 1842 in Eureka, IL, and died 25 Apr 1927 in Abingdon, Knox Co, IL. She married MARTIN V. DICKERSON 19 Mar 1866 in Knox Co, IL. He was born Abt. 1836 in Rocky Hill, KY, and died 1911 in Abingdon, Knox Co, IL.

Notes for M
ARTIN V. DICKERSON:
Georgie Stegall (GEStegall@chicago.avenew.com) believes that her relative is also a child of this couple:

Belle Dickerson b. 12 Jan 1880 St. Augustine md. Solomon Stegall b. 1877.

She believes "Belle" is "Elizabeth" a daughter of Martin V. Dickerson and Nancy H. Boydston. with siblings:

William A. Dickerson
John Cole Dickerson md. Jennie N. Boydstun
James W. Dickerson
Mary E. Dickerson
Jennie M. Dickerson md. Henry N. Stegall

These children seem logical and have been entered, although it should be noted that there is no real proof as yet.

Another descendant is Patrice Frantz, (stegs@netscape.net).

Children of N

  v.   JENNIE M. DICKERSON, b. 1877, Illinois; d. 1956; m. LAURENCE STEGALL, Unknown; b. Unknown; d. Unknown.
  Notes for JENNIE M. DICKERSON:
Jennie is buried with Henry N. Stegall, but married his brother, Laurence, according to 1900 Census of Cedar Township, Knox County, IL. All three lived with William and Nancy Stegall, the parents of Henry and Laurence. Admittedly, the census could be in error in matching the couple.

She was born 20 Apr 1833 in Arkansas, and died 24 Sep 1895 in (at home) Dallas Co, TX.

Notes for W
ILLIAM CHARLES LOWE:
William C. Lowe was issued a 3rd class grant for 320 acres in southeast Tarrant County on February 14, 1854. It adjoined the survey of Henry Brandenburg. A 3rd class grant meant the grantee had to be present between 1 Oct 1837 and 1 Jan 1840. These were issued after statehood between 1845 and 1870.

The family of William C. Lowe is enumerated in Ellis County, Texas in 1860 and in Tarrant County, Texas 1880.

"Early History of Cope Grove Community"
by I.T. Goodnight, Wellington, Texas

The grove where uncle Doll Lacy lived was known as the Couch Grove. Other settlers were: William Lowe, E. I. Emmons, Viseon Curry, Thomas Curry, James A. Curry, I.S. Goodnight, James A. Curry, Nixon Curry, Henry Curry.

All the above men possessed all of the requirements necessary to overcome the hardships of settling a new country.

The middle name, "Charles" is supplied by Marian Cote of Visalia, California.

Information comes from a death certificate, number given as Texas #13291. This certificate is the one for their daughter, Josephine Lowe Dorman.

Prior to contact with Marian, only the barest of information was available on the children of Billy and Amanda.

Children of W
ILLIAM LOWE and AMANDA HUITT are:
  i.   JOHN WALKER9 LOWE, b. 1851, Tarrant Co, TX; d. Unknown; m. M. ELLEN MARTIN, 04 Dec 1890, Tarrant Co, TX, by L.H. Foster, 6/39 - no children; b. Unknown; d. Unknown.
  Notes for JOHN WALKER LOWE:
Marriage record for John Lowe has middle initial A; other records have "W." Marion Cote gives his middle name as "Walker," which seems to settle the matter.

  ii.   WILLIAM HENDERSON LOWE, b. May 1853, Tarrant Co, TX; d. 13 Dec 1923, Bristow, OK; m. (1) ELIZABETH GOAD, 28 Dec 1893, Tarrant Co, TX; b. 09 Aug 1864, Springfield, MO; d. Unknown; m. (2) ZORA S. COTTER, Unknown; b. Abt. 1860; d. Unknown.
  Notes for WILLIAM HENDERSON LOWE:
Some information on this family comes from the records of Rugh Herbel of Marion, Kansas.

  iii.   MARY E. LOWE, b. Abt. 1855, Tarrant Co, TX; d. Unknown; m. W. M. MYRICK, 23 Jun 1877, Tarrant Co, TX, 1/137; b. Unknown; d. Unknown.
  Notes for MARY E. LOWE:
Dallas County, Texas Deeds, Vol. 87, page 603 7 Jan 1893.
Mary E. Myrick and Laura Ann Hayley for the sum of $800 the east 1/2 of the A.M. Curry 160 preemption survey, the same being 80 acres of land, more or less. This deed replaces a previous one dated 17 Dec 1889 where Laura Ann Hayley's name was written wrong as "Lara Haley" and Larra Haley."

  iv.   ISAAC THOMAS LOWE, b. Abt. 1857, Tarrant Co, TX; d. Bef. 1927, Texas; m. (1) MOLLIE FIELD, 01 Aug 1876, Tarrant Co, TX, 1/31; b. Unknown; d. Abt. 1887, Tarrant Co, TX; when son was 3-4 weeks old.; m. (2) EMMA C. WATSON, 30 Jun 1889; b. Abt. 1860; d. Unknown, (before 1895??); m. (3) AMANDA BARRETT, Abt. 1893; b. Bet. 1860 - 1870, "Many"; d. 05 Jan 1937, Tarrant Co, TX.
  Notes for ISAAC THOMAS LOWE:
Marian Cote does not list the children of the marriage to Amanda Barrett at all, but lists all the children with Emma C. Watson. As the date of marriage to Emma seems likely to accommodate the children's births, I at first attached them to Emma instead of Amanda.

Then I heard from Helen Parker in December 2002 (helen@sitesee.net). She was doing research for a friend who was a descendant of Effie Lowe. She said that Effie's death certificate showed "Many Barrett and Tom Low" as her parents, which would be Amanda Barrett.

Since there is almost no gap between children (even for a Lowe), I must assume that all the children belong to Amanda Barrett. She lived until 1937.

  Notes for EMMA C. WATSON:
Emma C. Watson is found on the 1880 Census of Tarrant County:

Holland, John J, white male age 51, Head or household, Farmer, b. MD,
father b. MD mother b. MD (or MO)
Holland, Elizabeth J., white female, age 43, Wife, keeping house, b. Oh,
father b. PA, mother b. PA
Holland, John M. white male age 12, son, single, at home, attends school, cannot
write, b. IL, mother b. MO, father b MD or MO
Holland, infant, white female age 1, at home, cannot read or write, b. TX
Father b. MD, Mother b. OH
Watson, Emma C., white female age 20, step daughter, single, at home
      b. TX, father NC mother OH
Watson, Martha A., white female age 14, step daughter, at home, attends
school, cannot write. b. TX, NC, OH
Watson, Ida A., white female age 9, step daughter, at home, attends school,
cannot write, b. AR, NC, OH
Watson, Joseph G., white male, age 8, step son, at home, cannot write
      b. AR, NC, OH
Watson, Willibur, white male, age 4, step son, at home, cannot write
      b. AR, NC, OH

It is an assumption that Emma C. Watson is the same person as E. C. Watson who married Isaac T. Lowe, but all dates and circumstances seem to fit.

  v.   BENJAMIN FRANKLIN LOWE, b. Abt. 1859, Tarrant Co, TX; d. Unknown; m. (1) M. A. RAGLAND, 09 Jan 1879, Tarrant Co, TX; 1/361; b. Unknown; d. Unknown; m. (2) SARAH RAGLAND, 07 Jun 1888, Tarrant Co, TX; 5/10; b. Unknown; d. Unknown.
  vi.   SARAH JANE LOWE, b. Abt. 1861, Tarrant Co, TX; d. Unknown; m. C. C. COTTER, 27 Feb 1881, Tarrant Co, TX; 2/233; b. Unknown; d. Unknown.
vii.   GEORGE EDWARD LOWE, b. 23 Feb 1867, Tarrant Co, TX; d. 12 Oct 1936, Sapula, Creek Co, OK; m. IDA ELIZABETH BELCHER, 24 Jan 1887, Dallas, Dallas Co, TX; b. 04 Dec 1870; d. 09 Sep 1955, Noti, OR.
  Notes for GEORGE EDWARD LOWE:
Tarrant County, Texas, Book 9, p. 488 - 9 September 1899

George and Ida Lowe, at that time residents of Ellis County, sell land in Tarrant County (an eighth?) of A.N. Curry survey containing 200 acres, more or less. Note from J. A. Wade for $560, paid $240 down payment.

Jack County, Texas, Book 11, p. 389.

A replacement deed for 9 September 1899 where George and Ida Lowe conveyed to J. A. Wade 20 acres of land a part of the A.N. Curry 160 acre tract in Tarrant County, Texas for $800. Original deed did not properly describe tract of land; this deed is intended to correct that.

Details on this family were obtained from family records of Susie M. Lowe, 2440 Longstapt 17, Sweet Home, OR 97386. Her letter is dated 16 Jun 1987

viii.   LAURA ANN LOWE, b. Abt. 1869, Tarrant Co, TX; d. Unknown; m. CHARLES HAYLEY, Unknown; b. Unknown; d. Unknown.
  Notes for LAURA ANN LOWE:
Dallas County, Texas Deeds, Vol. 87, page 603 7 Jan 1893.
Mary E. Myrick and Laura Ann Hayley for the sum of $800 the east 1/2 of the A.M. Curry 160 preemption survey, the same being 80 acres of land, more or less. This deed replaces a previous one dated 17 Dec 1889 where Laura Ann Hayley's name was written wrong as "Lara Haley" and Larra Haley."

  ix.   JULIA A. LOWE, b. Abt. 1871, Tarrant Co, TX; d. Unknown; m. (1) JIM MARKS, Unknown; b. Unknown; d. Unknown; m. (2) BENJAMIN FRANKLIN DORMAN, Unknown, (Julia's 2nd marriage? See notes); b. Abt. 1870; d. Unknown.
  Notes for JULIA A. LOWE:
Teresa ... (lifetree59@lookoutcomputer.net) writes in November 2000 to say that she is the great granddaughter of Julia Amanda Lowe and Benjamin Franklin Dorman. She notes that she has seen accounts of Julia being sister to Josephine who married B. F.'s brother Stephen Dorman, but like my information, these accounts show a marriage to Jim Marks.

Teresa says she has the death certificate showing a marriage to B. F. Dorman.

Possibly this is a second marriage for this Julia, or it may be a different Julia A. Lowe altogether. Because Teresa has a copy of the death certificate of Julia which shows she was married to Benjamin Franklin Dorman (and believes he is brother to Stephen Dorman), I have added this as a second marriage so as not to lose the information on the Marks. Probably some census work should be attempted to settle it. Dallas, Tarrant and Ellis Counties have been preliminarily searched for marriages (either one) with no result. I do not have complete marriage records for all counties.

There seems to be a heated dispute among the descendants, which will not be repeated here, about the names of the children, some information passed down in the family, and other information gleaned from the U.S. Census. The 1910 U.S. Census shows that Julie/Julia was married 13 years (1887) and that she was the mother of 8 living children, having had 9 total children.

  Notes for JIM MARKS:
Previous to contact with Marian Cote, I did not have a first name for Mr. Marks, husband of Julia A. Lowe.

  Notes for BENJAMIN FRANKLIN DORMAN:
This child is not proven, but it is believed that the Lowe sisters married Dorman brothers.

  x.   JOSPHINE A. LOWE, b. 18 Mar 1874, Tarrant Co, TX; d. 24 Mar 1956, Pampa, Gray Co, TX; m. STEPHAN T. DORMAN, 1889, Tarrant Co, TX; 5/338; b. Abt. 1866, age 70 at death; d. 18 Jul 1936, Pampa, Gray Co, TX.
  Notes for JOSPHINE A. LOWE:
Birth and death dates for Josephine come from Marian Cote.

She cites Josephine's obituary from the Pampa News, 25 Mar 1956:
